What should I have asked before my root canal?

I totally get the hyper-awareness thing—my kid had a root canal last fall and I felt like I was on “jaw patrol” for a week. What helped us was asking the dentist to walk us through what’s normal: pain, tingling, even weird tastes. They told us mild pain and sensitivity for about a week is expected, but anything sharp or getting worse isn’t. I wish I’d asked more about how long to avoid crunchy foods, too… we learned the hard way that popcorn is a no-go.

I think the “jaw patrol” phase is real, but honestly, I’d push back a bit on just accepting pain and tingling for a week as totally normal. After my second root canal, I had this dull ache that lingered past the “expected” timeline, and my dentist brushed it off at first. Turned out there was a tiny bit of infection left. I’d say if anything feels off—even if they say it’s expected—don’t wait too long to get it checked. And yeah, popcorn is evil post-root canal… but sticky stuff like caramels were even worse for me.

That’s a great point about not just accepting lingering pain as “normal.” I had a root canal a couple years back and the dentist said, “Oh, sore jaw is expected,” but it turned out I needed an adjustment because my bite was off. It’s easy to second-guess yourself, but your gut usually knows when something isn’t right. And yeah, sticky candy is brutal—I learned that the hard way with a rogue gummy bear.

I get what you’re saying about trusting your gut, but I've found that sometimes my “gut” just freaks out over normal stuff too. After my first root canal, I was convinced the pain meant something was wrong, but it turned out to be just typical healing. Not saying you should ignore things, but sometimes it really is just part of the process, you know? That said, sticky candy is definitely the enemy—I lost a filling to a caramel once and learned my lesson fast.

I totally relate to the “gut freak-out” thing. After my second root canal, I was convinced the throbbing meant infection, and I called my dentist twice in a week… turned out it was just nerves settling down. The anxiety is real, especially when you’re not sure what’s normal pain and what’s not. And yeah, sticky candy is brutal. I once bit into a taffy a couple months after a crown and felt the whole thing shift—never again. Sometimes I wish dentists gave a “what’s normal” checklist for recovery.
