Is socket grafting worthwhile if an implant is still uncertain?

If a tooth needs to be extracted but the final restoration plan isn’t settled, how do dentists weigh placing a graft in the socket against letting it heal without one?

I’d like to understand how expected changes in bone and gum shape affect later implant planning, and whether a graft can add steps or change the timeline if an implant is chosen. Is there a point where the answer depends mostly on the tooth’s location or the condition of the site, rather than a general rule?

The socket walls are one of the details that can change the decision. If most of the bony walls are intact, the site may keep its shape better as it heals; if a wall is damaged or missing, preserving the contour for a possible implant may be more of a concern. Tooth location matters too, so there isn’t a universal rule. The dentist’s examination and imaging can help show which situation applies.
