Turmeric stains are actually no joke—my clear retainers looked like I’d been chewing highlighters after a week of golden milk lattes. I tried soaking them in denture cleaner (cheap, works in a pinch), but honestly, the yellow never fully left. The herbal tea thing got me too... I thought switching from coffee would help, but my elastics still turned this weird brownish shade. My wallet’s definitely happier with water and the occasional green tea, but it’s wild how even “healthy” stuff can sabotage the whole clean-teeth vibe. Just gotta pick your battles, right?

I feel this so much. I once had my aligners turn this weird orange shade after a week of carrot juice and turmeric shots—looked like I’d been eating crayons. Honestly, even berries messed with mine. At some point, I just accepted the “tinted” look and focused on keeping them clean-ish. Water is underrated, for real.

Turmeric is honestly the worst for staining—I learned that the hard way. I used to think it was just coffee or red wine that’d mess up my trays, but nope, even stuff like spinach smoothies left a weird tint. I tried those cleaning crystals, but they only helped so much.

I started rinsing my mouth out with water every time I drank something other than water, and it made a difference. Not perfect, but definitely less neon orange. Also, using a soft toothbrush (no toothpaste) on the aligners helped with the surface stains—just don’t go too hard or you’ll scratch them up.

It’s kind of wild how quickly the color builds up though. I remember eating a bunch of blueberries one day and my trays looked like I’d used them as a paint palette. Guess it’s just one of those things—unless you want to avoid all the good stuff, there’ll always be some tinting. At least it’s temporary.

Honestly, I think people stress way too much about keeping them crystal clear. As long as they’re clean and you’re following the basics, a little color won’t hurt anything. Water does a lot more than people give it credit for.

It’s wild how many foods sneak up on you with stains. I used to think it was just the obvious culprits too—coffee, red wine, curry. But then I had this phase where I was obsessed with beetroot salads and, wow, my aligners picked up this weird pinkish hue almost instantly. I tried not to panic but it looked like I’d been chewing on markers. Rinsing with water helped a bit, but it never got them back to that perfectly clear look.

I completely get what you mean about the cleaning crystals not being a miracle fix. I’ve seen a few patients get frustrated when their trays still look a bit cloudy after using those. I always worry about people scrubbing too hard with a toothbrush, though. It’s so easy to scratch them up and that just makes them hold onto stains even more. Sometimes I wonder if we’re all just a little too obsessed with keeping things spotless. I mean, as long as you’re not letting stuff sit in there all day, a bit of tint isn’t the end of the world.

One thing that always gets overlooked is how even herbal teas can stain. I had a patient who only drank chamomile and peppermint, and she was convinced that was “safe”—but her trays still got this yellowish film. Kind of makes me paranoid about everything I put in my mouth now.

Is anyone else super cautious about colored mouthwashes? I’ve heard some of those can tint trays too, but I’m not sure if it’s actually a big deal or just me overthinking. Maybe I’m just anxious, but I feel like there’s always something new that’ll leave a mark if you’re not careful.
