Weirdest thing I learned—hydrogen peroxide is in a bunch of stain removers, even for teeth, and it’s the same stuff in hair bleach.

Still, I do wonder if we’re just making life harder for ourselves chasing some impossible standard… especially when my orthodontist keeps saying healthy gums matter way more than blindingly white teeth.

Honestly, I totally get the temptation for that “movie star” smile—after all the time (and money) spent on braces, you kinda want to show off the results, right? But I have to admit, after trying those whitening strips, my teeth felt like they were throwing a tiny tantrum every time I sipped water. It was like they were punishing me for my vanity.

I mean, I love a bright smile as much as the next person, but I’m starting to think my ortho has a point. I’ve seen friends obsess over whitening and end up with sore gums and weirdly sensitive teeth, while my grandma—who’s never bleached her teeth in her life—has zero dental issues and still rocks a killer grin. Maybe it’s more about confidence than color? Stains happen (especially if you’re a coffee fiend like me), but at least we’ve got healthy chompers underneath it all.

It’s wild how much we stress about tooth color when, honestly, sensitivity is no joke. I tried one of those peroxide-based kits a while back and my teeth felt like they were zapped every time I had something cold. Now I’m all about gentle care—even if that means my coffee stains stick around a bit longer.
