Do bridges ever actually feel “normal” in your mouth?

That’s interesting—my dentist said most people adapt, but I’m still super aware of mine after a few months. Did you notice any difference in how food tastes or feels with the metal vs porcelain? I wonder if material actually matters that much long-term...

I had a metal bridge for years before switching to porcelain, and honestly, I did notice a difference with food. The metal one made hot drinks feel almost weirdly metallic sometimes, and I swear certain foods tasted just a bit off. Porcelain's been way more natural for me—less of that odd aftertaste, and it blends in better with the rest of my teeth. But I still catch myself noticing it when I chew something tough. Maybe it’s just about getting used to it... but material definitely played a role for me long-term.

Man, I totally get that. I switched from metal to porcelain too, and even though it’s way less “robot mouth,” I still know it’s there when I bite into a steak or something chewy. It’s like my brain can’t fully forget it’s not the real deal, but honestly, it’s miles better than the old metal taste. Takes time, but hey—at least we’re not setting off airport metal detectors anymore, right?

I keep wondering if that “brain can’t forget” feeling ever really goes away or if it just fades into the background. I’m about a year in with my bridge (porcelain too), and sometimes I don’t notice it at all, but then out of nowhere, something chewy or crunchy reminds me it’s there. Do you find your bite feels different on that side? Mine feels a little off, like I have to think about how I chew now.

Also, is anyone else hyper-aware of temperature changes? Cold stuff especially makes me notice the bridge way more than regular teeth. It’s not painful, just... different. I guess it’s better than the weird metallic zing I used to get, but still not 100% “normal.” Maybe it’s just one of those things you adapt to over time, but does anyone actually forget about their bridge completely?

Yeah, I totally get what you mean about the “brain can’t forget” thing. I’m about 8 months in with mine and it’s mostly just part of my mouth now, but every once in a while, I’ll bite into something crusty and suddenly I’m super aware of it again. My bite does feel a little off sometimes too—like I have to remind myself not to chew too hard on that side. The temperature thing is real for me as well, especially with ice cream or anything really cold... it’s not pain, just this odd sensation that’s different from my natural teeth. I guess it’s just one of those things that never fully disappears, but honestly, I notice it less and less as time goes on.
