Maybe it’s just about doing it at all?

Honestly, I think you’re onto something. I’ve never made it through a full minute with salt water either—my mouth just gets tired. As for the picks, I still nick my gums sometimes but way less than when I started. For me, consistency made more difference than technique.

Totally agree about consistency. I struggled with regular floss and just gave up most nights, but with picks, it’s way less hassle. My gums were a bit sore in the beginning too—guess that’s just part of the adjustment period. Now, it’s almost automatic and I barely think about it. Technique matters, but honestly, just getting into the habit seems to do most of the work.

Floss picks honestly saved my sanity. Regular floss was like wrestling with dental tape in a phone booth—just awkward and annoying, especially when you’re half-asleep and just want to get it over with. I totally get what you mean about the sore gums at first. Mine felt a bit beat up for the first week or so, but then it just became part of the routine. I guess gums are like, “Oh, we’re doing this now? Fine, I’ll toughen up.”

I do think technique matters (as in, don’t go full lumberjack on your gums), but you’re right—just showing up every night is half the battle. It’s wild how quickly something that felt like a chore turns into muscle memory. Now I’ll be halfway through an episode and realize I’ve already flossed without even thinking about it.

One thing I noticed: my dental checkups got way less dramatic after switching to picks. My hygienist even commented on how much less plaque I had between my teeth. Maybe she was just being nice, but hey, I’ll take the win.

Honestly, anything that makes flossing less of a hassle is a win in my book. Not everyone’s into the picks though—my partner swears by those water flossers, but I tried one and ended up spraying water all over the bathroom mirror. Not my finest moment.

Anyway, it’s reassuring to hear someone else had the same adjustment period with picks. Makes me feel less weird about those early sore-gum days.

I totally relate to the struggle with traditional floss—it always felt like I needed three hands to do it right. Switching to picks made the process way more manageable for me too, especially since I have some tight contacts between my teeth. I also had that initial gum soreness, but like you said, it faded pretty fast as my gums adapted. Technique definitely matters... I had to remind myself not to snap the pick down too hard or I’d pay for it later. It’s encouraging to hear your checkups improved; I noticed less bleeding and plaque at mine as well, so I guess there’s something to it. The water flosser thing cracked me up—tried that once and ended up soaking my shirt. Floss picks just feel more straightforward.

Traditional floss was always a wrestling match for me, too—especially once my hands started getting stiff. Picks made a world of difference, but I’ll admit, I was skeptical at first. My dentist kept pushing the string, saying it’s more thorough, but honestly, if it’s so awkward that you avoid doing it, what’s the point? Picks are just more doable.

I did have to learn not to jam them in between my teeth. A few sore gums later, I figured out a gentle wiggle works better than brute force. And yeah, the water flosser... tried that after seeing some ad and ended up spraying the bathroom mirror more than my teeth. Maybe they’re great for some folks, but picks are just less hassle.

My hygienist says as long as I’m getting between the teeth and not skipping days, she’s happy. My gums have been healthier since I switched—less bleeding and way less tartar at cleanings. At this age, anything that makes me actually stick with the routine is a win.
