Weird but true: toothpicks aren’t enough

Read somewhere that using just toothpicks or even regular floss doesn’t really get all the gunk out from between your teeth. Apparently those little interdental brushes are way more effective, especially if you’ve got bigger gaps (I had braces, so… yeah). Anyone else surprised by how much stuff comes out when you start using them? Or is it just me being grossed out by my own mouth?

Not just you - when I first tried those little brushes, I was honestly shocked (and a bit horrified) at what came out. I had braces too, and even after using floss I thought I was doing a decent job, but apparently not. My dentist said they’re especially good for folks with wider gaps or dental work, so it makes sense. I still use floss sometimes, but the brushes just seem to get more out, especially in those tricky spots. It’s weirdly satisfying and gross at the same time... but definitely made me rethink my routine.

Totally get what you mean. The first time I used those tiny brushes, I was like, “Wait, THAT was hiding in there?” It’s almost like running a system cleaner on your computer and seeing all the junk files you didn’t know existed - except, you know, in your mouth.

I still keep floss around for the tighter spots, but honestly, those brushes are next-level for anyone with bridges or old fillings. Toothpicks just feel kind of old-school now. They’re fine for getting that one annoying popcorn kernel out, but they don’t really do much else.

One thing I noticed: the size matters a lot (and not in a weird way). If you pick one that’s too big, it feels like trying to fit a USB plug in upside down - just doesn’t work and hurts. Too small and it’s basically useless. Took me a few tries to find the right fit.

It’s kind of wild how much tech has crept into dental care. Next up: Bluetooth-enabled toothbrushes judging my life choices...

That’s exactly how I felt after my first real cleaning with those little brushes. Honestly, I used to think toothpicks were enough too, but after a few crowns and a bridge, they just didn’t cut it anymore. Did you find your gums got a bit sore at first? Mine did, but it passed pretty quick. It’s kind of amazing what gets left behind even when you think you’re being thorough. Makes me wonder how many years I missed spots without knowing...

Yeah, my gums were kinda mad at me for the first week or so - definitely got a bit sore. But now it’s just part of the routine. It’s wild how much junk those brushes pull out, even after flossing. Makes me wish I’d started using them sooner tbh. Toothpicks just don’t cut it anymore for me either.
