I completely get what you mean about overthinking every little thing after implant surgery. Honestly, I thought I was the only one obsessively checking my stitches with a flashlight and poking around in the mirror. For me, the anxiety was almost worse than the actual discomfort—every new sensation felt like it might be a sign something was wrong. I know some people say you can relax and just chew carefully on the other side, but I really struggled to trust that at first. The idea of accidentally pulling at a stitch or causing an infection kept running through my mind.

I do think swelling gets worse at night for a lot of people. My oral surgeon mentioned that too—something about being upright during the day versus lying down, plus talking and eating more as the day goes on. But honestly, even knowing that didn’t stop me from worrying when things felt tighter or more sore in the evenings. It’s so easy to spiral into thinking you’ve messed something up just because it feels different than it did that morning.

I probably erred on the side of caution more than most—ate nothing but yogurt and mashed potatoes for way longer than necessary, and avoided using that whole side of my mouth for almost two weeks. Looking back, maybe I could’ve eased up sooner, but I’d rather be overly careful than risk complications. Everyone heals differently, and if being cautious gives you peace of mind, there’s nothing wrong with that.

You’re definitely not alone in feeling anxious about your stitches or recovery. Sometimes it helps just to hear someone else admit they were nervous too—even if it means we’re both guilty of shining flashlights in our mouths at 2am...

That’s honestly one of the most common things I hear after implant surgery. Our mouths are super sensitive, and even normal healing can feel weird or worrying. Swelling and tightness at night is totally a thing—gravity shifts, less distraction, and suddenly every twinge feels huge. Being cautious with eating is smart, though I’d agree sometimes folks could ease back into normal foods sooner than they think. But really, whatever helps you feel comfortable during recovery is valid. The flashlight checkups made me smile—believe me, you’re in good company there.

That hits home. After my first implant, evenings were the worst—felt like my mouth was twice its size even though it looked fine. Did anyone else have stitches that felt like they were poking more at night? I ended up eating mashed potatoes way longer than I needed to, just for peace of mind.

That’s really common, honestly. Stitches can feel way more noticeable at night—your mouth’s not as busy, so every little poke stands out. I’ve seen people stick to soft foods longer just for comfort, and that’s totally fine. The important thing is you’re healing, even if it feels weird. If it gets super uncomfortable or you notice swelling that doesn’t go down, it’s worth checking in, but what you’re describing sounds pretty normal.

That’s reassuring to hear. I’ve been sticking to soups and yogurt mostly, partly because I’m nervous about messing up the stitches and partly because I don’t want to risk needing another visit (and bill). Has anyone noticed if certain foods or drinks make the stitches feel worse? I’m trying to avoid anything that might irritate things, but it’s tough to know what’s actually a problem versus just uncomfortable.
