seems like a lot of buzz around “tech” for something that’s basically plastic in your mouth.

Haha, right? I had the same thought at first—like, how fancy does a mouthguard really need to be? But I caved and tried a 3D-printed one last year. For me, it’s thinner but somehow tougher than my old molded one. Haven’t managed to chew through it yet (and trust me, I’m a champion grinder). Staining’s been less of an issue too, though it still gets that weird cloudy look over time. Not perfect, but definitely less “mouthful of gum.”

I get the skepticism—“tech” is everywhere now, even for night guards. But honestly, after years of waking up with jaw pain and going through those bulky boil-and-bite ones, the custom fit really does make a difference for me. It’s less like wearing a hockey puck and more like… well, nothing at all sometimes. I still wish they’d figure out a way to keep them from getting that cloudy look, though.

Custom ones really are a game changer comfort-wise, but man, the price tag made me hesitate for a long time. I kept trying to convince myself the cheap drugstore guards would work if I just got used to them. I’d wake up with a sore jaw and sometimes even little cuts on my gums from the edges. After a while, it just wasn’t worth saving the money if I was miserable every morning.

I finally caved and ordered a custom one online (had to do a couple impressions at home, which was weirdly fun and stressful at the same time). The fit is way better—like you said, sometimes I forget it’s even in. But I totally get what you mean about them getting cloudy. Mine started looking kind of gross after a few months, even though I’m pretty good about cleaning it. Not sure if there’s some magic trick for that or if it’s just inevitable.

I’m curious—has anyone tried those cleaning tablets they sell for retainers and dentures? Do they help at all with that cloudy look, or is it just marketing hype? Also, did your insurance cover any of your custom guard? Mine didn’t, and that stung a bit.

It’s funny how something so small can make such a big difference in sleep quality... but yeah, would love to know if there’s a way to keep these things looking clear longer.

We went through this with my kid last year—she’s a teeth grinder, and the drugstore guards just didn’t cut it. She’d wake up cranky, sometimes with sore spots in her mouth. The custom one was a big investment, but honestly, the difference in her sleep and mood was worth it. About the cloudy thing: we tried those cleaning tablets too, hoping they’d keep it looking nice. They helped a bit with the smell but didn’t really bring back that clear look. Our insurance didn’t cover it either, which was rough. Still, I’d do it again for how much better she feels.

That’s pretty much what happened with me—tried the boil-and-bite first, but it was uncomfortable and I’d end up taking it out halfway through the night. I get what you mean about the price tag on the custom one, though. Did you notice if your kid’s grinding actually got better, or just the sleep? I’m still debating if the extra cost is worth it since my insurance also won’t cover. And yeah, those cleaning tablets don’t do much for the yellowing... I’ve just accepted mine’s always going to look a little gross.
