I lost a front tooth in a bike accident and tried one of those DIY dental cement kits before I could get to the dentist. Honestly, it felt super weird and didn’t last long, but it gave me some peace of mind for like, a day. Anyone else use these? Did it help or just make things worse?

Had a similar situation a few years back—chipped my front tooth on a coffee cup of all things. I tried one of those over-the-counter kits, but honestly, it felt pretty awkward and I kept worrying it would pop out at the worst moment. It did help me feel a bit less self-conscious until I could get to my dentist. Did you notice any discomfort or irritation after using the kit? I remember my gums felt a bit sore for a day or two, but maybe that was just me being sensitive.

That was totally my fear too, but weirdly, the kit I used actually stuck better than I expected. I was super nervous about eating or even talking, but it held up for a couple days. I didn’t really get any gum soreness, but I did notice this weird chalky taste for a bit. Maybe the irritation just depends on which kit you grab? Honestly, I was way more worried about doing more damage than anything else...

I totally get what you mean about worrying it would pop out. The first time I tried one of those kits, I was convinced it’d just come loose mid-conversation or, worse, while eating. But honestly, it held up better than I expected—though the texture was super weird at first. That chalky taste you mentioned? Yeah, that’s spot on. Kind of reminded me of old-school antacids or something.

The soreness thing is interesting. For me, the gum where the tooth got knocked out felt a little raw for a day or two, but I think that was more from the actual injury than the kit itself. Still, I was hyper-aware every time I bit down—like my brain was screaming “don’t mess this up more.” I guess part of it depends on how well you clean and dry everything before using the kit? I remember reading that moisture can mess with how well it sticks.

One thing that tripped me up was how temporary it all feels. The packaging says “not a permanent solution” in big letters, but when you’re desperate and can’t get a dentist appointment for days, you just want something to make you look less like a hockey player in the meantime. My dentist wasn’t thrilled when I told him what I’d used, but he said as long as you’re gentle and don’t eat anything too hard or sticky, it’s usually fine for a short stretch.

If anyone’s thinking about trying these kits, just be careful not to jam anything in too forcefully—I learned that the hard way and ended up with some extra gum tenderness. And yeah, nothing beats getting it fixed properly by a pro, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do between appointments.

I remember using one of those kits after chipping a molar on popcorn—definitely not ideal, but it got me through a weekend until my dentist could see me. The stuff crumbled if I tried eating anything more solid than soup, but at least it kept the sharp edge from cutting my tongue. Dentist wasn’t thrilled either, but said it was better than leaving the nerve exposed. Guess it’s all about getting by until you can get proper care.
