I totally hear you on the putty—every time I’ve had to do one of those impressions, I get so tense thinking I’ll gag or mess it up. The digital scans are a huge step up, honestly. They use this little wand camera, and while it can feel a bit awkward, there’s no goop and it’s over pretty quick. Still, not every office has them yet, and sometimes the fit can be off if you move too much during the scan, but it’s way less gross overall.

Insurance is a whole other headache. I’ve found that unless you’ve got a pretty clear diagnosis like bruxism with a note from your dentist, most plans just won’t budge. Tried appealing a couple times and just got the standard “not covered” letter. Frustrating, especially when you know it could prevent bigger issues down the line...

That’s true, but honestly, I’ve had more issues with digital scans than the old-school putty. My last scan ended up needing a redo because of “scan artifacts”—so the process stretched out longer than expected. The tech is cool, but I wouldn’t say it’s always smoother. Sometimes the traditional way just works better for certain mouths.

As for insurance, yeah, it’s a pain. But I’ve found that some flexible spending accounts (FSAs) will at least let you use pre-tax dollars for a guard—even if coverage isn’t there. Not perfect, but it helps a bit with the cost.

Yeah, the tech is impressive but it’s not always the magic fix people expect. I’ve had a scan come out weird too—felt like extra time in the chair for no real reason. That FSA tip is solid though, anything to make the cost sting less. Mouth guards aren’t hype in my experience, but the process can be a mixed bag depending on your luck with tech and insurance.
