Getting used to new dentures: slow and steady or all at once?
Honestly, I thought toast would be easier too, but for me it just turned into a crumbly mess and scratched the roof of my mouth. I totally get the sandwich anxiety - felt like I’d never enjoy one again. But after a few weeks, things did get better. I started with thin, lightly toasted bread and lots of soft fillings. It’s not perfect, but it’s way less stressful now. Don’t lose hope - your mouth does figure it out, just takes more patience than I expected.
Not gonna lie, I kinda had the opposite experience.
For me, soft stuff just got stuck everywhere and made things messier. Weirdly, crunchier stuff like crackers actually felt easier to manage - less gummy, you know? Guess everyone’s mouth figures it out its own way.“I started with thin, lightly toasted bread and lots of soft fillings.”
That’s interesting - crunchy foods always made me nervous at first. I get what you mean about soft fillings getting stuck, though. For me, softer stuff felt safer because I was worried about cracking the denture or hurting my gums. I guess it really depends on how the fit is and how sensitive your mouth feels those first few weeks. Sometimes the “safe” foods end up being more annoying than you’d expect... trial and error, I guess.
My kiddo’s first week with dentures was basically a comedy show. I thought mashed potatoes and yogurt would be a safe bet, but somehow every meal turned into a game of “where did that glob go?” He’d end up with half his lunch wedged under the plate, and then complain crunchy stuff was “too scary.” Honestly, the “easy” foods made more mess than anything. Eventually, he got bold and tried a cracker - and it went way better than the pudding fiasco. Guess sometimes you just have to experiment and laugh through it...

This made me laugh because it’s exactly what happened with my nephew. We thought soft stuff would be a breeze, but it just turned into a sticky mess - he even got applesauce in his hair one time. Weirdly enough, he did better with toast than with oatmeal. I think sometimes the firmer foods actually help the dentures “find their place,” if that makes sense.
From what I’ve seen (and been through myself), slow and steady usually works best, but you kind of have to let them try things out and see what feels right. There’s no perfect order. Some crunchy foods are less scary than others - my nephew liked thin crackers but hated carrots at first.
It’s a messy process, but it does get easier. If he’s up for experimenting and laughing about it, that’s probably the best sign he’ll adjust just fine. Sometimes you just have to let them surprise you...
