Swelling was definitely worse than the pain for me too. I was worried about every little twinge, but the ice packs and sticking to soft foods made a big difference. I skipped the fancy gels and just used what I had at home—saved a bit of money that way.

Swelling really does catch people off guard more than the pain itself. Ice packs and soft foods are definitely the MVPs in those first couple of days. Honestly, most folks do fine with basic home care—fancy gels aren’t usually necessary unless your dentist specifically recommends them. Just remember, gentle rinsing and keeping the area clean matter more than expensive extras.

My teenager just had all four wisdom teeth out last month, and honestly, the swelling was way more dramatic than we expected. The pain was manageable with the meds, but her cheeks puffed up like a chipmunk for days. We stuck with ice packs and mashed potatoes—she actually started rating different flavors of pudding out of boredom. Didn’t bother with any fancy gels either; gentle saltwater rinses and just keeping an eye on things worked fine for us. I think half the battle is just keeping them comfortable and distracted.

Swelling is wild, right? I remember when my kid got his wisdom teeth out—looked like he’d lost a fight with a bee swarm for a good week. We did the whole ice pack rotation, but honestly, I think the biggest help was just keeping him entertained and not letting him poke at the stitches.

He got tired of applesauce real quick... ended up making a game out of which soup he could slurp the fastest without wincing. The pain meds helped but sometimes he just wanted to sleep it off. Didn’t bother with any of those numbing gels either—seems like overkill if you’re already on prescribed stuff.

Saltwater rinses are underrated in my opinion. As long as you’re careful about what goes in their mouth, and keep the boredom at bay, it’s mostly just a waiting game. The swelling freaked us out at first but it went down on its own. Not sure all the fancy extras are worth it unless there’s some real bad pain or infection.
