I totally get the anxiety—it’s wild how much you have to learn on the fly. When I had my first root canal, I just assumed it’d be done right the first time, too. Turns out, those hidden canals are no joke. I asked a million questions at my last appointment and felt awkward, but honestly, it helped me feel a little more in control. Insurance not covering it twice stings, though. You’re not overthinking it—being cautious is just smart after all that hassle.

Yeah, the hidden canals thing totally caught me off guard, too. I remember thinking, “How can there just be more holes in my tooth?” The dentist showed me an x-ray and it still looked like a magic eye puzzle. It’s wild how much is under the surface. I get asking a ton of questions—honestly, I think it’s the only way to feel even halfway in control. The insurance part is brutal, though... mine barely covered the redo and I’m still salty about it.

The insurance part is the real pain, honestly—almost worse than the toothache. I had a redo a couple years back because they missed a canal, and even after seeing the x-rays, I couldn’t tell what was going on. Did your dentist explain why some canals get missed? Mine said some teeth are just “sneaky.”

Totally agree, the insurance headache is just as bad as the dental pain—maybe worse, since at least you know when the toothache will end. My kid had to get a root canal on a molar last year and I was shocked when the dentist said there might be “hidden” canals. I mean, how is that still a thing with all the tech they have now? But apparently kids’ teeth can be even trickier because things aren’t always where they’re supposed to be. I kept asking if they were sure everything was cleaned out, and honestly, I still worry about it coming back.

It’s frustrating because you trust the x-rays and the dentist, but it feels like a guessing game sometimes. And then insurance barely covers a redo, which makes you second-guess every decision. I wish there was a more foolproof way to tell if they got it all the first time—seems wild to me that something so important can just get “missed.” Maybe I’m paranoid, but after seeing my kid go through it once, I’m not taking any chances if she ever needs another one...

The whole “hidden canals” thing gets me too. I mean, you’d think with all the fancy imaging they have, it would be a non-issue by now. But my dentist actually showed me how unpredictable molars can be—some have extra roots, some curve weirdly, and apparently kids’ teeth are even more wild. Still, it’s hard not to worry when you’re trusting someone to literally clean out tiny spaces you can’t see. Have you ever considered getting a second opinion or asking about 3D scans before a redo? I’ve heard those can help spot stuff regular x-rays miss, though insurance is another battle...
