I totally get what you mean about the gel paranoia—my biggest fear was ending up with a numb tongue and sounding like I’d just come from the dentist for hours. Eating after using it felt weird, like I couldn’t tell if I was biting my cheek or not. The pain definitely sneaks back at night for me too, even with the gel. Maybe it just wears off faster when you’re asleep? Has anyone tried those numbing patches instead of gel? Wondering if they’re any less messy...

Those gels can be tricky, right? I’ve found the patches a bit less messy, but they don’t always stay in place, especially overnight. The numb tongue thing is real—I used to worry I’d bite the inside of my cheek and not even notice. It does seem like the numbing wears off faster when you’re sleeping, maybe because you’re not reapplying as often. Hang in there, it gets better after a few days.

I actually had better luck with the gels, funny enough. The patches just peeled off halfway through the night for me, and then I’d wake up with the sore spot exposed anyway. With the gel, at least I could dab a bit more on if I woke up. The numb tongue is definitely weird—I once drank tea too soon and didn’t even notice how hot it was until later... wouldn’t recommend that. For me, the discomfort never fully went away until about a week in, but everyone’s different, I guess.

I actually get a bit nervous with the gels, to be honest. I’ve seen a few folks use way more than they should because it’s easy to just keep dabbing it on, especially in the middle of the night when you’re half-awake and hurting. There’s always that little worry in the back of my mind about numbing too much of your mouth or even swallowing some of it by accident. I know the patches are annoying when they peel off (and yeah, waking up with a sore spot is the worst), but I guess I like that they’re sort of “set it and forget it”—at least in theory.

That numb tongue thing is no joke, though. I had a patient once who burned their whole palate on soup and didn’t realize until hours later... yikes. Anyway, I wish there was a better option that actually stayed put and didn’t make you feel like you’d been to the dentist twice in one day. Maybe I’m just overly cautious, but I always worry about overdoing it with those gels.

I totally get where you're coming from with the gels. I always feel like I’m either not putting enough or suddenly it’s half my mouth that’s numb. Honestly, I wish there was something in-between—like a patch that actually sticks but doesn’t taste weird. Has anyone tried those new dissolvable strips? Wondering if they’re any better with staying put or if it’s just another gimmick.
