Rough or chipped sealant: normal wear or possible decay?

I have an older sealant on a molar that has started to feel rough along one edge. It may have a small chip or shallow gap, and food sometimes catches there, but I’m not sure whether it’s visible or whether there’s any decay around it.
How does a dentist usually tell the difference between ordinary sealant wear or partial loss and decay beneath or beside the sealant? Is this typically judged by an exam alone, or would a bitewing X-ray or removal of the remaining sealant be needed?
If the tooth is otherwise sound, would a small rough or chipped area usually be smoothed or repaired, or is the whole sealant generally replaced? Mainly wondering whether food trapping and a rough edge are reasons to get it checked promptly.
