I mean, if a kid’s brushing well and not eating tons of sugar, do they really need it?

That’s a fair question. I get where you’re coming from—sometimes it does feel like we’re being pushed to do every possible thing, just in case. But with sealants, the idea isn’t that they’re just for “lazy brushers.” Even kids who brush well can miss those deep grooves on their molars, especially the back ones. Sometimes those spots are just tricky, no matter how careful you are.

Have you ever noticed how some kids get cavities even when they seem to be doing everything right? It’s not always about sugar or brushing habits—some teeth are just more prone to getting food stuck in those tiny pits. Sealants are basically a barrier for those hard-to-reach places.

I totally get being cautious about over-treating. But sealants are pretty low-key—no drilling, just a quick coating that can help prevent headaches down the road. Did your dentist mention if your kid has especially deep grooves or any early signs of decay? That sometimes tips the scale for me when I’m making recommendations.
