For me, hot drinks were way worse—felt like my whole mouth was throbbing if I tried coffee the first few days.

That’s wild, because I swear cold stuff was my personal horror movie. Ice water? Felt like my teeth were auditioning for a toothpaste commercial... in Antarctica. But yeah, wax is basically orthodontic duct tape—never thought I’d be so grateful for a tiny blob of it.

That description made me laugh, but I totally get it. For me, the initial sensitivity was more of a dull ache with anything acidic—orange juice was like pressing fast-forward on the discomfort. It’s interesting how everyone’s pain triggers are different. Wax really is a lifesaver though; it’s wild how something so simple can make such a difference in comfort levels during those first few weeks. Hang in there—the adjustment period does get easier.

Orange juice was the worst for me too—like instant regret with every sip. I tried to power through because I didn’t want to waste a whole carton, but after a couple days I just gave up on anything acidic. Wax is such a game changer, for sure. I remember thinking it was just a gimmick at first, but after one night of brackets shredding my cheeks, I changed my tune real quick.

One thing I wish someone had mentioned to me sooner: you don’t have to buy the expensive ortho wax from the office. I found a generic pack at the drugstore for way less, and it worked just as well. Kind of makes you wonder what other little “braces hacks” people have figured out to save money or make things easier. Did anyone try those silicone covers instead of wax? I was tempted, but wasn’t sure if they were worth it.

Tried the silicone covers once—honestly, they felt a little bulky compared to wax. I kept worrying they’d pop off mid-conversation (which happened, twice). Wax just molds better for me, especially when you’re half-asleep and just want the pokey bits to stop. Totally agree about the generic stuff too. The markup at the ortho office is wild. If only someone had mentioned that before my first month’s supply ran out...

I gave those silicone covers a shot during my first month—mostly because the ortho handed me a sample and I figured, why not? For me, they just never stayed put. I’d be mid-sentence and suddenly realize one had gone AWOL. Wax is messier but at least it does what it’s supposed to. The price difference is wild though... I found a huge pack online for way less after my first refill. Lesson learned the expensive way, I guess.
