Cleaning Teeth Professionally vs. DIY Before Braces - Which Did You Choose?

Honestly, I wouldn’t risk skipping the pro cleaning before braces. I thought I was on top of things with my electric toothbrush and flossing, but once the wires went on, it was a whole new ballgame. My dentist pointed out some buildup I’d missed, especially behind my molars - stuff I never would’ve caught myself. DIY is fine for maintenance, but before braces? I wanted a clean slate, even if my wallet didn’t love it.

That’s a really common experience - people are usually surprised by what gets missed, even with good brushing and flossing habits. I’ve seen folks who were super diligent at home, but once we did a pro cleaning before their braces, there was always a little extra hiding out, especially around the gumline or way in the back. Did anyone have any issues with sensitivity after their cleaning, or was it smooth sailing? Sometimes that’s the part people worry about more than the actual braces.

My kiddo had a pro cleaning before his braces, and honestly, I was shocked at what they found even though he’s pretty diligent. There were a few spots way back that just needed that extra attention. He did have a bit of sensitivity after, especially with cold drinks for a day or two, but nothing too dramatic. I think he was more nervous about the cleaning than the braces, which made me laugh a little - turns out the cleaning was the easy part!

That’s actually pretty common - kids (and honestly, adults too) can be super thorough and still miss those tough-to-reach spots. I see it all the time, especially behind the back molars. The sensitivity usually fades fast, like you said. It’s always a bit funny what ends up being the bigger worry for them... sometimes the cleaning gets way more hype than the braces themselves.

It’s funny, the cleaning was way scarier for my daughter than the idea of braces. She psyched herself up for weeks, then the hygienist found a little plaque hiding out behind her last molar - cue the drama. I think it’s just one of those things where even if you brush and floss like a pro, there’s always that one spot you miss. Honestly, she forgot about it within a day, but the anticipation was real. Sometimes I wonder if we all overthink those appointments...
