My braces cleaning routine is thorough, but my gums are getting irritated

I’m trying to keep plaque from building up around my fixed braces, but I’m not sure when thorough cleaning becomes too much. I brush with a soft manual toothbrush and use an interdental brush around the brackets and under the wire twice a day. I also floss in the evening with a threader.

The gumline around a couple of lower brackets is red and bleeds when I clean there. It feels slightly tender afterward, while the rest of my gums look fairly normal. I don’t want to avoid those spots and let plaque remain, but pushing the interdental brush through seems to irritate them, and the whole routine is taking long enough that I’m tempted to rush it.

For anyone with fixed braces or aligners, how do you balance careful plaque removal with being gentle? Is it better to use a smaller interdental brush or reduce pressure and keep the same frequency? I’m also wondering whether bleeding limited to the areas around brackets can be from local plaque buildup, whereas widespread bleeding or swelling would be more concerning.

At what point would persistent bleeding, swelling, or tenderness mean I should contact the orthodontist or dentist rather than just adjust my technique?

A brush that bends or catches may be a sign that the size or angle isn’t working for that space, not just that less pressure is needed. Rather than forcing it through, it would be sensible to ask the orthodontist or dentist to confirm the right size and demonstrate how to clean around that particular bracket and wire setup.
