Is using those gum health apps actually helpful?

Do you think there’s a way for apps to give meaningful technique advice without all the fancy hardware?

I’ve wondered about this too. It seems like a lot of these apps just track whether you brushed for two minutes and then throw a badge at you, but don’t really help you get better at it. I get the appeal of gamification, but after a while, like you said, it kind of feels like “collecting stickers.” Honestly, I’m not sure how much my brushing technique has actually improved from using them.

I think your idea about video or audio guides is interesting. I tried one app that had little animated videos showing the right way to angle your brush and move it around your mouth. The thing is, I watched them once and then pretty much ignored them after that. It’s easy to tune out unless you’re actively trying to change your habits. Maybe if the app could somehow notice patterns in your brushing (like if you always skip a certain area, based on your own input or a quick self-assessment quiz) and then suggest a specific video, that would be more helpful than just generic tips.

But yeah, without the smart toothbrush sensors, I’m not sure how an app can really know if you’re missing spots or using bad technique. Unless they come up with some clever workaround—like asking you to check off areas you brushed, or maybe even using your phone’s microphone to listen for brushing sounds? That might be a bit much though, and probably not super accurate.

I do think even basic reminders and educational content are better than nothing, especially for people (like me) who weren’t taught much about technique growing up. But I agree, it’s a little underwhelming compared to what’s possible with those pricey electric brushes. Still, I guess it’s progress that we’re even thinking about this stuff now. Ten years ago, I just hoped for the best and waited for my dentist to yell at me about missing plaque.

If anyone’s found an app that actually helped them improve their technique without needing a fancy brush, I’d love to hear about it. Otherwise, I’ll probably keep using mine for the gentle nudge, but with pretty low expectations.

I totally get what you mean about the “collecting stickers” vibe. I tried one of those apps last year after my hygienist said I was missing spots, and honestly, it didn’t do much except remind me to brush longer. The badges were cute, but I still got the same old lecture at my next cleaning. What actually helped was when my dentist handed me a little disclosing tablet—seeing all that missed plaque in the mirror was way more motivating than any app. Still, I guess the reminders are better than nothing, especially on those mornings when I’m half asleep.

Honestly, I relate—those badges never really changed my habits either. The disclosing tablets are a game-changer though. It’s wild how seeing the actual plaque makes you rethink your technique. I guess the apps are decent for reminders, but nothing beats visual feedback.

Yeah, I’ve noticed the same thing. Those apps are alright for nudging me to brush or floss, but honestly, I just end up swiping away the notifications half the time. The disclosing tablets are way more effective for me, too. The first time I used one, I was actually kind of grossed out by how much I was missing—definitely made me rethink my whole brushing routine.

I do kinda wish the apps had more real-time feedback, like maybe syncing with a smart toothbrush or something? Otherwise it’s just another thing on my phone to ignore. I still get the “you need to floss more” talk every cleaning, so clearly nothing’s totally fixed my habits yet... But seeing the problem in the mirror with those tablets is hard to ignore.

If anyone finds an app that actually makes a difference, let me know. For now, I’m sticking with old-school tricks and hoping it eventually sinks in.

I get where you're coming from, but I actually think the apps can be more useful than they seem, depending on how you use 'em. For me, tracking streaks and seeing stats in the app kinda gamifies it—like, if I see I’ve gone 20 days without missing a floss, I’m weirdly motivated not to break that chain. Disclosing tablets are great for visual proof, but having those little digital “wins” helps keep me honest day-to-day. Maybe it’s just my brain liking the dopamine hit, but hey, whatever works...
