Is using those gum health apps actually helpful?

I totally get the appeal of streaks and stats—my phone’s full of random health apps for that exact reason. But do you ever feel like the numbers can be a bit misleading? I mean, I’ll admit, I once kept a perfect brushing streak for a month, but when I finally checked in with my dentist, there were still spots I was missing (turns out, technique matters more than just not skipping days). Have you noticed if those apps actually help with *how* you floss or brush, or is it more about just ticking off the habit?

I tried one of those apps last year, but honestly, after the novelty wore off, I found myself just tapping “done” out of habit—even when I wasn’t as thorough as I should’ve been. Maybe it’s just me, but sometimes a little old-school accountability (like checking in with my hygienist) feels more real than digital badges. Do you think the app feedback actually improves your technique, or is it just motivation to keep at it?
