What do you actually eat with aligners?

Cutting out snacks is honestly the only way I’ve managed to keep my sanity with aligners. I tried to keep up with brushing after every little thing at first, but it just wasn’t realistic—especially at work or if I’m out and about. I’m with you on the “one big meal” strategy, and then I just do a proper clean after.

I’ll admit, I’m not shelling out for fancy snacks or meal replacements. For me, it’s whatever’s already in the fridge—hard-boiled eggs, apples (I just slice them so they don’t mess up my trays), and peanut butter on crackers. I do avoid sticky stuff or anything that’s a pain to clean off, mostly because I’m not buying extra dental supplies every month.

Coffee is the hardest part, though. Straws are okay, but honestly, I just take the trays out and drink it fast. The whole staining thing is real—I had to replace a tray early once because it got so gross looking. If you’re on a budget, it’s even more motivation to keep things simple so you don’t end up paying for extra aligners or cleaning products.

Yeah, the coffee struggle is real. I tried using a straw but it just feels weird, and half the time I end up taking the trays out anyway. I’ve also noticed certain foods leave a film or residue that’s tough to get off unless you’re brushing right away, which isn’t always possible if you’re not at home.

I’m with you on keeping snacks basic—eggs, apples, sometimes cheese and whatever crackers I’ve got. I can’t justify paying for special “aligner-friendly” snacks either. Curious if anyone has found a cheap way to keep trays from smelling funky between cleanings? I’ve tried rinsing them with just water but not sure it does much. Is there something in your regular routine that helps with that, or do you just deal with it?

I totally get what you mean about the trays picking up weird smells—sometimes I swear mine develop a funk even when I’m just drinking water. I’ve gotten a bit paranoid about it, honestly. Someone once told me to use diluted mouthwash for a quick rinse (not soaking, just a swish), and that helped a bit. But I still feel like nothing beats actually brushing them, which is such a pain if you’re out. Once I left them in my car in the summer and... let’s just say I almost gagged putting them back in. Now I keep a little travel case and a mini toothbrush in my bag, just in case.

Leaving trays in the car during summer is brutal—I learned that the hard way too. That plasticky taste just lingers no matter what you do after. I’ve tried the mouthwash rinse trick, but I always worry about the alcohol in some rinses messing with the plastic. I agree, nothing really beats brushing them, even if it’s a hassle. I started carrying those disposable toothbrushes (the ones with toothpaste beads) for emergencies. Not perfect, but better than nothing.

I’m curious—do you ever eat or drink anything besides water with your aligners in? I know you’re not supposed to, but I’ve been tempted with coffee more than once when I’m in a rush. I always regret it because the trays get stained and the smell is even worse, but sometimes convenience wins out. Wondering if anyone else bends the rules a bit, or if you’re all super strict about taking them out every single time.

- Coffee is my kryptonite too. I’ve tried sipping it through a straw with aligners in, but that’s just wishful thinking—still got the stains and the weird aftertaste. Ended up scrubbing the trays like I was trying to erase my mistakes.
- I’ll admit, I’ve risked a few sips of cold brew during meetings when I couldn’t sneak away. Regret level: medium-high. The smell just clings, and I swear it makes my breath worse than if I’d just left them out.
- Food is a hard no for me. Tried it once with a cracker out of desperation, and picking crumbs out of the trays was not a good time. Lesson learned.
- Water’s my only safe bet now. Anything else, and it’s like playing dental roulette.
- Those disposable brushes are lifesavers though—keep one in every bag and car, just in case I cave to temptation (which… happens).
- Honestly, I don’t think anyone’s 100% strict all the time. Sometimes you just have to bend the rules and hope your dentist doesn’t have x-ray vision for coffee stains.
