Yeah, eating with aligners in is a nightmare. I tried it with a cracker once, thinking it’d be fine since it wasn’t sticky or anything—big mistake. The crumbs got wedged everywhere and I felt like I was chewing on a mouthguard. After that, I just take them out even for quick snacks.
Drinks are where I get a bit lazy too. Cold stuff doesn’t seem to do much harm (at least not that I’ve noticed), but I’m always paranoid about hot coffee warping the plastic. Has anyone actually had theirs go wonky from hot drinks? I keep hearing horror stories but haven’t seen it firsthand.
Those cleaning crystals are decent, but sometimes I feel like they just mask the smell instead of really getting rid of it. Anyone else notice that? Swishing water helps, but if you’re out and about, sometimes you just have to live with a little coffee breath until you can get home and clean them properly...

Totally get this. I tried eating a soft granola bar once, thinking it’d be fine, but it just turned into a sticky mess in the aligners—never again. Now I just pop them out for anything besides water. As for hot drinks, I’ve seen a friend’s aligner get a bit warped after she drank tea straight from the mug. It wasn’t super noticeable, but it didn’t fit as snug after. The cleaning crystals are okay, but yeah, sometimes the smell lingers if you’ve had coffee or garlic. Swishing with water helps a bit, but I usually just wait till I’m home to really clean them up.
That mouthguard feeling is real—I swear half the time I felt like I was chewing on a rubber tire. I learned the hard way that anything even remotely sticky just turns into a science experiment in there. As for hot drinks, I miss my morning coffee something fierce, but yeah, warping is no joke. Garlic breath? My grandkids told me I smelled like a pizza shop once... so now I double up on rinsing and try to stick to less “aromatic” lunches when I’m out. Hang in there, it does get easier (or at least you get better at hiding the weird stuff).
- Sticky stuff is a nightmare, totally agree
- I just take my aligners out to eat anything—learned that the hard way after trying to sneak a cracker once
- Coffee is rough, but I started doing iced coffee with a straw after I take them out, then brush before popping them back in
- Garlic and onions are off my lunch list now... too much hassle
- Mostly stick to easy-to-clean things like yogurt, eggs, or sandwiches (nothing gooey)
- Rinsing like crazy after every meal—otherwise it gets gross fast
Totally get where you’re coming from—my kid’s been on aligners for a few months now, and meal times definitely needed a new routine. We stick to a step-by-step: first, aligners out before any food, no exceptions (learned that after a peanut butter disaster). After eating, quick rinse, then brush teeth and aligners before putting them back in. Coffee’s tricky, but switching to water with meals helped. For snacks, we do apple slices, cheese, or plain crackers—nothing that sticks or stains. It’s a hassle at first but becomes second nature after a while.
