Weirdly, chewing on the other side after a root canal can make your jaw sore

I remember that weird hesitation too—like, you know it’s fixed, but your brain’s still super cautious. Took me a good month to stop babying that side. The headaches I got were more like a dull ache, almost like jaw tension, but sometimes they’d spike after eating. It does get better with time, promise. Chewing gum helped me too, though I was nervous at first. You’re definitely not alone with this stuff.

Yeah, I totally get that “super cautious” feeling—my brain was running a full diagnostic every time I tried to chew on that side.

“Took me a good month to stop babying that side.”
Same here, except for me it was more like six weeks before I stopped treating my molar like a fragile prototype. I noticed my jaw would tense up too, especially if I ate something chewy. Chewing gum felt weird at first, but it actually sped up the recalibration process for me. Funny how our brains lag behind the hardware upgrades sometimes...

Yeah, I totally relate to that “fragile prototype” vibe. My jaw was on high alert for weeks after my root canal—felt like every bite was a test run. Gum helped me too, weirdly enough. Took a while to trust that side again, but eventually muscle memory kicked in. Wild how your brain just refuses to believe the fix worked for so long... It’s not just you, it’s definitely a thing.

I get what you mean about not trusting the “fixed” side. Honestly, after mine, I was so paranoid about messing up the work (especially after seeing that bill...) that I chewed on the other side for weeks. But then my left jaw started getting sore, probably from overcompensating. I ended up splitting bites between both sides, even if it felt weird at first—actually saved me from needing a follow-up visit for jaw pain. It’s wild how your brain just won’t let go of that “be careful” instinct.

My kid had a root canal last year and I swear, she acted like that tooth was made of glass. Every meal turned into this weird balancing act—she’d only chew on the “safe” side, and then started complaining her jaw felt “tired.” Anyone else’s kids get dramatic about this stuff, or is mine just auditioning for an Oscar?
