Read this article yesterday saying some mouthwashes might actually mess with your gums and make teeth less stable over time. Kinda freaked me out because I always thought mouthwash was, you know, just good for breath. Anyone else worried about their gums or had issues after using mouthwash regularly?

I get where you’re coming from. My kid’s dentist actually said to skip mouthwash for now and just focus on brushing and flossing, especially since some of those rinses can be harsh on gums. We tried a “whitening” one for a while and it made their mouth sting—never again. Maybe it’s better to keep things simple unless a dentist says otherwise?

That’s actually really sound advice from your dentist. There’s a lot of marketing around mouthwash, but for kids—especially with sensitive gums or loose teeth—it can do more harm than good. I’ve seen some patients develop irritation or even mild chemical burns from certain rinses, especially those “whitening” ones. Brushing with fluoride toothpaste and gentle flossing are usually enough unless there’s a specific issue your dentist wants to address. It’s easy to get caught up in all the products out there, but sometimes less really is more when it comes to oral care.

We had a similar experience—my daughter’s gums looked red and puffy after trying a “kids” mouthwash. Honestly, it freaked me out at first, but her dentist said to just stick with gentle brushing and flossing for now. It’s so tempting to buy all these products, but I’m realizing simple routines really do work best, especially for younger kids.

Yeah, I've wondered about this too. Used mouthwash daily for years thinking it was just a bonus after brushing, but after reading some of those articles I started paying more attention. Noticed my gums were kind of tender and even bled a bit more than usual during flossing. Switched to just salt water rinses for a while—honestly, things seem less irritated now. Wild how all these products can actually backfire sometimes, right?
