What foods did you give up or swap after getting braces?

Curious - did you totally ditch crunchy stuff or just cut back? I basically lived on mashed potatoes for the first week, haha. Anyone actually stick to the “no popcorn” rule or nah?

I tried to be super strict at first because I was so worried about breaking a bracket or something - honestly, the “no popcorn” rule freaked me out more than anything. But after a couple weeks, I realized it’s not all or nothing. I still avoid the really crunchy stuff like chips, but I do eat softer toast and even the occasional thin cracker if I’m careful. Mashed potatoes got old fast for me... yogurt and scrambled eggs were my go-tos. I guess everyone finds their own balance, but I definitely didn’t give up everything crunchy forever.
I admire your flexibility, but I’ll admit I was a bit more stubborn about the rules. After snapping a bracket on a rogue tortilla chip in my second week, I decided crunchy anything just wasn’t worth the trouble. Call me overly cautious, but even “careful” nibbling didn’t save me from an emergency visit. These days, I stick to softer foods - though, yes, mashed potatoes do get old fast. But hey, better bored taste buds than another repair bill...

That’s a tough way to learn, but honestly, your caution makes a lot of sense. I see so many folks frustrated after a bracket pops off - especially from something as sneaky as a tortilla chip. Even careful biting sometimes isn’t enough because those little edges can put a surprising amount of pressure right where you don’t want it.
Sticking to softer foods might feel boring, but you’re actually protecting your investment (and your time). I usually suggest people try mixing things up with different textures - like scrambled eggs, yogurt with soft fruit, or even pasta dishes. Blending soups or adding some soft steamed veggies can give you a break from the mashed potato rut.
It’s not always fun, but you’re right: “better bored taste buds than another repair bill...” That’s the trade-off. And hey, it does get easier as you go along. The finish line will be worth it.
