How long does the post-adjustment ache actually last for you?

Every time I get my braces tightened, I swear it feels like the soreness lasts longer than the last time. Usually, it’s a couple days, but this week I’m on day four and still can’t bite into a sandwich without wincing. Does it get worse as treatment goes on? Or am I just being dramatic? Curious if anyone else has tips for surviving those first few days after an adjustment - ice cream only diet is getting old.

I totally get where you’re coming from - those first few days after a tightening can feel endless. Four days of aching isn’t unusual, even if it feels like forever in the moment. Sometimes, it really does seem to last longer as treatment goes on, but honestly, I think it’s more about which teeth are moving and how much pressure they’re under. I remember one adjustment where I couldn’t even handle scrambled eggs for nearly a week, but then the next time was no big deal.

Have you tried switching up what you eat? Smoothies with nut butter or protein powder kept me going when I got sick of ice cream and soup. Cold packs on the outside of your cheeks can help too - kind of numbs things a bit. And don’t beat yourself up for feeling dramatic; pain is pain, and everyone handles it differently. Are you using any over-the-counter pain relievers? My ortho recommended taking ibuprofen right before my appointments and that helped take the edge off.

Hang in there - it’s a slog, but you’re making progress every time.

That’s interesting - my ortho actually mentioned the same thing about certain teeth being more sensitive depending on what’s shifting. I’ve noticed my front teeth tend to ache longer than the molars after adjustments. Has anyone else found that specific teeth hurt more or for a different amount of time? I always wonder if it’s just me or if that’s pretty common.

That’s exactly what my kid goes through - front teeth seem way more sensitive, especially after they put on new wires. The ortho said it’s because those teeth have less root support compared to molars, so they feel the pressure more. I actually think the pain lasts longer when canines are moving too. Anyone else notice if certain types of movements (like rotating vs. pulling down) make things worse for specific teeth?

My daughter’s front teeth definitely take the brunt every time - she’ll barely touch anything crunchy for days, but molars seem to bounce back faster. When they started pulling her canines down, it was a whole new level of grumpiness. I’ve noticed the pain sticks around longer when teeth are shifting directions, not just moving forward or back. We rely on smoothies and soft pasta, but honestly, ibuprofen before bed seems to help her sleep through the worst of it. Sandwiches are still off-limits for a while though...
