What foods did you give up or swap after getting braces?

Anyone actually stick to the “no popcorn” rule or nah?

I tried, I really did. But then movie night happened and a rogue kernel almost turned my mouth into a medieval torture chamber. Lesson learned—popcorn is basically the enemy now. I didn’t totally ditch crunchy stuff, though. Chips are my weakness, so I just started breaking them into tiny pieces and letting them soften a bit (don’t judge). The first week was all about soft stuff—mashed potatoes, yogurt, even scrambled eggs. By week two, I got brave and attempted a salad. That was a mistake. Lettuce is way more aggressive than it looks when you’ve got wires everywhere.

Honestly, the “no popcorn” rule is there for a reason, but I know a couple people who risked it and ended up with brackets popping off. Not worth the drama in my opinion. Anyone else discover weird soft food combos? I started dipping bread in soup just to feel like I was eating something with texture.

Totally get this. I was super anxious about popcorn after hearing horror stories, so I just cut it out right away. Even the tiniest bit stuck in my braces freaked me out. Chips made me nervous too, honestly. I tried the “let them soften” trick but still felt like I was playing with fire. My weirdest combo was cottage cheese with soft fruit—sounds odd, but it got me through a lot of lunches. Lettuce is sneaky sharp, you’re not wrong there.

Popcorn is definitely on my “nope” list too. I kept hearing stories about people needing emergency wire repairs after just one kernel got wedged in the wrong spot, so I didn’t even risk it. Chips were tricky for me as well. Even the ones that seemed softer would somehow find a way to jab my gums or get stuck in the brackets. I tried eating them slowly and letting them kind of dissolve, but honestly, it just made me more paranoid than anything.

Cottage cheese with fruit actually sounds pretty smart—never thought of that combo, but I get how you’d want something easy and zero stress to eat. I went through a phase where I basically lived on scrambled eggs and yogurt. Not very exciting, but at least there was no risk of snapping a bracket.

I totally relate to what you said about lettuce being sneaky. You think it’s soft, but then you bite down and suddenly there’s this sharp edge poking at your gums or getting wrapped around a wire. It’s weird how even “safe” foods can surprise you like that.

I will say, after a few months, I started getting less anxious about food—maybe just got used to being careful? Or maybe my teeth/gums toughened up a bit. Still, I never went back to popcorn or hard chips until the braces were off.

It’s kind of comforting knowing other people are navigating the same weird food minefield. Makes me feel less ridiculous for obsessing over what’s safe to eat and what isn’t.

Popcorn was basically enemy number one for me too—my ortho made it sound like one rogue kernel could cost hundreds in repairs, and honestly, I just don’t have the budget for surprise visits. Chips were a close second, but what really got me was how even “baked” or “puffy” ones managed to break into sharp bits. I tried the whole “let it dissolve in your mouth” trick, but then half the time I’d forget and crunch down anyway. Not worth the stress.

Cottage cheese is a good call, though I never quite got into it. I did a lot of oatmeal with mashed banana, which was cheap and filling. Also, applesauce became my go-to snack, even though it’s basically baby food. At least I didn’t have to worry about it getting stuck.

Totally get what you mean about lettuce. I thought salads would be safe, but those little leaf edges are sneaky. I started chopping everything super tiny, which helped a bit, but sometimes it just felt like too much work for a meal.

After a while I got less anxious, but I still avoided anything risky. The idea of busting a bracket and having to pay for repairs just wasn’t worth it for me.

That’s exactly why I gave up on chips too—one bite and I’d panic about snapping something loose. Did you ever try soft tortillas instead of bread or chips? I found they were way easier to eat and didn’t get stuck nearly as much. Also, did you ever risk nuts, or was that a hard no for you? I missed peanut butter pretzels, but not enough to gamble a bracket repair bill.
