Interesting point about the headphonesβI get what you mean about becoming hyper-aware of sensations. For me, though, I've noticed that having a detailed conversation during procedures can sometimes backfire. If the dentist asks me something mid-procedure, I feel awkward trying to respond clearly with tools in my mouth...which then makes me more anxious. Instead, I prefer focusing on breathing techniques or visualizing something calming. But yeah, totally agreeβit's all about finding your personal comfort zone.
