Propping your head up with extra pillows—yes, that’s a game-changer. I did that too after my last root canal, and it seriously made a difference with the throbbing overnight. I don’t know if it was just gravity or what, but I woke up way less puffy than I expected. The heat vs. ice thing is such a wildcard for me. Sometimes a warm compress felt like a hug for my jaw, other times it just made me more aware of the ache. Ice was hit or miss too—if I overdid it, my whole face would feel weirdly numb, but in short bursts it was soothing.

Soft foods are where it’s at during recovery. Scrambled eggs were my go-to as well, along with mashed potatoes and even overcooked pasta (not exactly gourmet, but hey). I’ll admit, I tried to eat a slice of pizza on day two—huge mistake. Chewing anything remotely tough just made the area throb.

One odd thing that helped me was rinsing gently with warm salt water a couple times a day. Not swishing hard, just letting it sit. It seemed to calm things down and kept everything feeling clean without being harsh. My dentist also suggested avoiding straws for a bit, which surprised me, but apparently the suction can mess with healing.

The anxiety before the procedure was honestly worse than the actual recovery for me. I spent so much time stressing about pain, but once it was done and I figured out my little comfort hacks, it really wasn’t as scary as I’d built it up to be.

Funny how everyone finds their own tricks—what works one day might not work the next. Just gotta listen to your body and roll with it.

You really nailed it with the anxiety part—waiting for the root canal was honestly the worst for me, too. I totally get the pillow trick, and I swear by warm salt water rinses as well. Funny how something so simple can make a difference. And yeah, the whole heat vs. ice thing... sometimes neither feels right, you just have to go with what your jaw wants that day. Glad you found what worked for you. Recovery’s never one-size-fits-all.

The anxiety before the root canal was honestly worse than the actual thing for me too. I remember lying there, trying to distract myself with music, but my jaw just kept tensing up. The pillow under the neck trick helped a bit, but I also found that keeping my mouth slightly open (instead of clenching) made a difference. Warm salt water rinses were a lifesaver, but I never quite figured out if ice or heat worked better—sometimes neither felt right, like you said. Did you end up having any weird jaw stiffness afterwards? Mine lasted a few days and I wasn’t sure if that was normal.
