KEEPING MY TOOTHBRUSH ACTUALLY CLEAN...AM I OVERTHINKING THIS?

Every time I brush, I end up staring at my toothbrush like, “how clean is this thing, really?” I rinse it after each use but sometimes it just looks…gross? Is it just me or do these things get funky way too fast? What’s everyone else doing to keep them fresh?

You’re definitely not alone—people underestimate how gross a toothbrush can get just sitting there. I’m a bit obsessive about this stuff, honestly. Rinsing is good, but what really helps is making sure it’s standing upright to air dry, not trapped in one of those little plastic covers (those things are like mini saunas for bacteria). I swap mine out every 2-3 months, sometimes sooner if it looks sketchy. I’ve even soaked it in mouthwash a couple times when it looked especially sad... Maybe overkill, but hey, peace of mind.

This is exactly why I get a little stressed about my kid’s toothbrush, to be honest. He’s got asthma and his immune system isn’t the greatest, so I’m always worrying about germs more than most people probably do. I used to use those plastic covers thinking I was protecting it, but then I read somewhere (maybe here?) that they actually make things worse. Now I just stand his brush up on the windowsill where it gets some sun, hoping that helps a bit.

I swap his out every month, maybe even sooner if he’s been sick. Mouthwash soak is a good idea—I might try that next time. Sometimes I feel like I’m being over the top, but then again, peace of mind is worth a lot when you’ve got a little one with health issues. It’s comforting to know I’m not the only one who thinks about this stuff more than necessary...

I totally get where you’re coming from. I used to think those little plastic covers were protecting my braces toothbrush, but my ortho said the same thing—just let it air dry. I actually started rinsing mine with hot water after brushing, then leaving it bristles-up in a cup. Swapping it out more often when you’ve got a kid with health stuff going on makes sense to me. Sometimes I’ll do a quick soak in mouthwash, but honestly, just keeping it dry and out in the open seems to work best. You’re not overthinking—it’s just being careful.

I’ve wondered about the mouthwash soak, honestly. I tried it a couple times with Listerine and the toothbrush ended up smelling way too strong—almost like it was just holding onto the scent instead of rinsing clean. Maybe that’s just me being picky. The air drying thing makes sense, though. I used to keep mine in one of those travel cases thinking it kept germs away, but then I read somewhere that it actually traps moisture and can make bacteria grow faster? Now I just stand mine up bristles-up in a cup by the window, hoping the sunlight helps a bit.

I also noticed after about a month or so, the bristles start to splay out and look kind of gross no matter what. At that point I just swap for a new one. Still feels weird sometimes—I mean, we put these things in our mouths twice a day, you’d think there’d be a more “sterile” option by now…
