"Monthly payments were manageable for me, but I did have that nagging thought each month like, 'Wait, did I pay that yet?'"
Haha, yeah, I feel this on a personal level. I went the monthly route myself because at the time it just made sense financially. But man, keeping track of another payment every month was definitely a hassle. There were a couple times I had mini panic moments thinking I'd missed one (thankfully never actually did!).
The refund policy thing is spot-on advice too. A friend of mine moved states halfway through her Invisalign treatment and it turned into a bit of a mess. She ended up paying extra fees to transfer her case to another orthodontist because the original office didn't have a clear refund or transfer policy. So definitely worth asking about upfrontβit's one of those things you don't think you'll need until suddenly you do.
Another thing I'd suggest looking into is whether your orthodontist offers any kind of discount for paying upfront. Mine did, and even though I couldn't swing it at the time, it was a pretty decent chunk off the total cost. If you're able to budget for it, that could be a nice bonus.
Either way, braces are one of those investments that really pay off in the long run. Sure, it's not exactly fun to shell out money for metal brackets or aligners, but being able to smile confidently (and eat popcorn without worry) is priceless.
Totally relate to that monthly payment anxiety. I went upfront myself because the discount was too good to pass up, but it definitely stung a bit at first. One thing I'd addβcheck if your orthodontist offers third-party financing options. My niece used CareCredit, and it simplified her payments a lot. Either way, braces are worth every penny once you see that final smile...and yeah, popcorn freedom is pretty great too.

Couldn't agree moreβseeing patients' confidence transform is honestly the best part of my job. Curious though, has anyone here considered clear aligners as a budget-friendly alternative? They're not always cheaper, but sometimes financing options differ...

Totally agree, braces were definitely worth it for my daughter. We went with monthly paymentsβmade it manageable without stressing our budget too much. Clear aligners were tempting, but our ortho mentioned they're not always ideal for younger kids who might forget to wear them consistently. Something to keep in mind if your kid tends to be a bit forgetful...
We did upfront payment because our ortho offered a decent discount. It was a bit tight at first, but saved us money overall. Definitely depends on your cash flow situation though...monthly payments can be easier to handle.
