KEEPING CLEAR ALIGNERS ACTUALLY CLEAR - ANYONE ELSE STRUGGLING?

I’ve noticed the same thing with the snap cases - mine always end up with this weird haze, and I can never tell if it’s just dried saliva or something else. I tried those denture tablets too, and yeah, they got rid of the yellowing but left my trays feeling almost gritty? Did you rinse yours a ton after? I’m starting to think maybe the plastic just wears down over time no matter what. Ever tried those ultrasonic cleaners? I keep seeing them online but not sure if they’re worth it or just another gimmick...

Those denture tablets can leave a weird film, yeah - I always tell folks to rinse trays for a solid minute after soaking, but sometimes that gritty feeling just sticks around. I’ve actually tried an ultrasonic cleaner at home (just a cheap Amazon one) and honestly, it did help with the haze. Didn’t make them look brand new, but definitely less cloudy. The plastic does wear out over time though, no matter what you do… kind of annoying, but normal.

I’ve noticed that weird film too, especially after using the tablets - sometimes it feels like no amount of rinsing gets rid of it. The ultrasonic cleaner thing is interesting though, I’ve been tempted to try one but wasn’t sure if it’d actually help. Do you find it’s worth the hassle to use every day, or just once in a while? I’m always paranoid about scratching the trays if I get too aggressive with brushing…

That film is so stubborn, right? I’ve seen a lot of people come in frustrated about it, and honestly, those cleaning tablets can sometimes leave a residue if they’re not fully dissolved or rinsed off. Ultrasonic cleaners are actually pretty gentle since they use vibrations instead of scrubbing, so there’s less risk of scratching compared to brushing too hard. I wouldn’t say you need to use one every single day - maybe just once or twice a week for a deep clean, then stick to gentle brushing and rinsing the rest of the time.

Funny enough, I’ve had patients who swear by just using unscented clear dish soap (a tiny drop) and a super soft brush. It sounds weird, but it cuts through the film without being abrasive. Have you tried switching up your toothpaste or brush type? Some toothpastes are a bit gritty and can actually scratch the aligners over time, which just makes them cloudier. Curious if anyone’s noticed that difference, or if it’s just me seeing that pattern...

CLEAR ALIGNERS AND THAT PESKY FILM - WHAT’S WORKED FOR US

That film really is stubborn. My daughter’s been wearing her aligners for a few months now, and it took some trial and error to figure out what actually keeps them clear (or at least not totally cloudy). At first, we just followed the instructions and used the cleaning tablets, but I swear, sometimes they left more of a weird residue than before. I’d pull her aligners out of the cup and they’d look almost filmy, especially if we didn’t rinse them like crazy after.

Here’s what ended up working best for us, step by step:

1. Rinse right away after taking them out. If she leaves them dry for even an hour, that film seems worse.
2. Use a super soft baby toothbrush with a tiny bit of unscented clear dish soap. Not much - just enough to get some bubbles going.
3. Rinse again...and then rinse some more. I’ve noticed if any soap is left, it gets trapped in the little grooves.
4. Once or twice a week, we use an ultrasonic cleaner (borrowed from my husband’s glasses kit). It doesn’t work miracles but definitely helps with buildup in the corners.

We tried switching toothpaste too because her usual one was kind of gritty - didn’t realize that could scratch the plastic until her orthodontist mentioned it. After swapping to a gel-type paste and using it only on her teeth (never on the aligners), things improved quite a bit.

Funny thing - she was super grossed out by the idea of dish soap at first, but now she prefers it over those fizzy tablets. Less taste/smell left behind.

Honestly, it’s still not perfect. Some days they just look cloudy no matter what we try. But at least they’re not getting scratched up anymore, which seemed to make everything worse before.

Curious if anyone else’s kiddo complains about the taste from those cleaning tablets? Mine says she can always tell when there’s even a hint left on there...
