Daily mouthwash vs. regular dental checkups for keeping your mouth healthy?
mouthwash just felt like a bonus, not a replacement.
That’s spot on. Mouthwash can reduce bacterial load and maybe help with gingivitis, but it’s not going to remove plaque or tartar. Once calculus forms, only mechanical removal (scaling) at a dental cleaning actually works. I always tell people: think of mouthwash like the cherry on top - nice, but not the sundae itself. Braces really do make you appreciate those little interdental brushes, don’t they?
Mouthwash is like the bonus track on an album - nice to have, but it’s not the main event. I used to think rinsing was enough until I got braces. Suddenly, flossing and those little brushes felt more important than ever. Anyone else notice how much tech has changed dental care? Electric toothbrushes with timers and pressure sensors are kind of a game-changer... but even with all that, nothing beats the feeling after a real cleaning at the dentist. Guess there’s no shortcut for some things.
I get what you mean about mouthwash being the “bonus track” - it’s satisfying, but it’s not gonna carry the whole album. I’ve seen so many folks come in thinking a swish is enough, but nothing replaces getting in there with floss or those little interdental brushes, especially with braces or tight teeth. All the gadgets are fun (and honestly, I love my electric toothbrush), but even the fanciest brush can’t scrape off that stubborn tartar like a dental cleaning can. There’s just no tech that beats a pro with a scaler... yet.
I totally relate to the “bonus track” analogy - it’s weirdly comforting to know I’m not the only one who thought mouthwash could do more of the heavy lifting. I’m a bit nervous about my first cleaning next week (haven’t been in years), but hearing that even the fanciest brushes can’t handle all the tartar makes me feel less guilty. I guess I’ll just have to trust the pro with the scary tools... fingers crossed it’s not as bad as I imagine.

I used to feel exactly like that - honestly, the sound of those tools still makes me tense up a bit. But after skipping cleanings for almost five years (life kept getting in the way), my first visit back wasn’t nearly as awful as I’d built it up to be. Mouthwash is nice, but it never touched the tartar hiding behind my lower front teeth. The hygienist was gentle and explained everything, which helped more than I expected. You might be surprised how quickly you get used to it again.
