Noticed my gums getting crankier as I get older—anyone else?

I’ve actually got one of those pressure sensor brushes—honestly, it kind of freaks me out when the light flashes at me. But I guess it’s better than shredding my gums. I still worry I’m missing spots because I’m too gentle now... it’s like a weird balancing act.

Totally get what you mean. I keep second-guessing myself—am I brushing too soft, or not enough? Sometimes I miss my old “just scrub and go” days, but then my gums remind me why that’s not the best plan. The pressure light makes me feel like I’m in trouble with my toothbrush, which is kinda hilarious if you think about it.

I get the temptation to be extra gentle, but honestly, I went through a phase of basically tickling my teeth and still ended up with plaque in weird places. My hygienist actually showed me how to angle the brush and use small circles—didn’t have to press hard at all. Funny enough, I started getting better results than when I was scrubbing like crazy. Maybe it’s more about technique than pressure? Those lights on the toothbrushes just stress me out though...

Yeah, those pressure sensors on brushes just freak me out too. I used to brush like I was sanding wood, and my gums hated me for it. Switched to the whole “gentle circles” thing and honestly? Way less bleeding, way fewer issues. It’s wild how much technique matters over brute force.

I mean, if you’re on a budget, you can get a soft manual toothbrush for a couple bucks and just focus on your technique. Here’s what worked for me: first, I switched to a soft bristle brush (medium was too rough). Next, I started timing myself—two minutes, gentle pressure, little circles like you mentioned. I actually used my phone timer at first, which felt silly, but it helped.

I get the appeal of gadgets, but I’ve found just being consistent with a basic brush and not rushing through it made the biggest difference. My gums stopped bleeding after a couple weeks, and I didn’t have to shell out for a fancy electric brush. Maybe I’m just stubborn, but sometimes old-school works fine if you stick with it.
