Even with all the workarounds, there are mornings where I just stare at the brush and think, “Not today.”

That hit home. Some days it really does feel like a standoff—me versus my own toothbrush. I tried switching to an electric one, but the vibrations made my grip even shakier. Ended up dropping it in the sink more times than I care to admit. For now, I just use a rolled-up dish towel to help prop my wrist. Not fancy, but it helps a bit.

That towel trick is actually pretty clever—sometimes the simplest hacks make the biggest difference. I’ve seen people wrap foam or even use those rubber jar openers to bulk up the handle too. Electric brushes aren’t for everyone, especially if the vibration makes things worse. There are also some adaptive grips out there, but honestly, half the time it’s just about finding what feels doable that day. Don’t beat yourself up on the tough mornings... you’re definitely not alone in this.

That’s exactly what I worry about with my daughter. The vibration sometimes makes her hands feel even more out of control, so we’ve actually stuck with manual brushes for now. We tried wrapping a washcloth around the handle, but it kept sliding off. Has anyone found a way to keep those DIY grips from moving around? I’m also curious—do you rotate different tools depending on how stiff your hands (or your kid’s hands) are that day, or just stick to what works most of the time? Some mornings just feel impossible...

Yeah, I’ve run into the same problem with stuff just slipping off. The washcloth idea was great, but I couldn’t get it to stay either. What ended up working for me (weirdly enough) was using those thick rubber bands you get on broccoli or asparagus at the grocery store. I just wrap a couple around the handle, then put the washcloth over that. The rubber bands grip the brush and sort of hold the cloth in place. Not perfect, but definitely less sliding.

I’ve also tried using that self-adhesive medical tape—the kind that sticks to itself, not your skin? It’s cheap at most drugstores and actually gives a decent grip even without anything else wrapped around it. Plus, it doesn’t get as gross as foam does after a few uses.

As for switching tools, honestly, I do mix it up depending on how my hands are acting up that day. Some mornings I can manage a regular toothbrush with one of those fat foam pencil grips (cut lengthwise), and other days I just can’t get my fingers to cooperate at all and end up using a “baby” toothbrush with a chunky handle instead. My kid thinks it’s silly but hey, whatever works.

Not sure if this helps, but sometimes when my hands are really stiff, I’ll skip brushing right away and try again after running my hands under warm water. Makes a surprising difference.

Curious—has anyone tried those silicone slip-on grips? They look handy but I’m always wary of spending money on something that might not actually work...

Those silicone slip-on grips are hit or miss for me. I tried one from the pharmacy and, honestly, it was a bit too squishy—felt like wrestling a wet fish. But I will say, it didn’t slide around at all. If you find one that’s firm enough, it might be worth a shot. I still go back to wrapping with self-stick tape most days though... it’s just easier to swap out when it gets icky. Warm water on the hands is a lifesaver too—I do that before breakfast and it helps loosen things up.
