BRACES HURT WAY MORE THAN I EXPECTED... WHAT HELPS?
Those zaps when you bite down wrong are the worst - I kept thinking I was breaking a tooth or something.
That “zap” sensation is actually pretty common - it's your teeth adjusting to new pressure, not breaking. I found that sticking with soft foods for the first few days after an adjustment helped a lot. Ibuprofen worked way better for me than numbing gel, honestly. And if the brackets are rubbing, orthodontic wax is a lifesaver. It really does get less intense over time, even if it feels endless at first.
That zap feeling threw me off at first too - felt like an electric shock every time I bit down. I actually noticed it was worse after eating anything crunchy, so I just stuck to yogurt and soup for a bit. Did anyone else have trouble sleeping the first night after an adjustment? That dull ache kept me up way longer than I expected...
That first night was rough for me too - I kept waking up because my teeth just throbbed. Did you find anything that actually helped with the ache? I tried ice packs but wasn't sure if it did much. Wondering if this gets better after each adjustment or if it's always this intense...
I totally relate to the waking up from that throbbing pain - it’s like your whole jaw is pulsing, right? I remember after my first adjustment, I was convinced I’d made a huge mistake. I kept thinking, “Did I actually need braces this badly?” The ache was so much worse than I expected, and ice packs didn’t do much for me either. I tried wrapping a bag of frozen peas in a towel and holding it to my cheek, but honestly, it just felt cold and distracting.
What helped a bit (and I was super skeptical at first) was swishing warm salt water. Someone suggested it for mouth sores, but it seemed to calm things down for my teeth too. Also, I caved and took some ibuprofen before bed, which took the edge off enough to get a few hours of sleep. Not sure if that’s the best idea long-term, but desperate times…
The thing that really freaked me out was wondering if this would happen every time they tighten the wires. For me, the first week was definitely the worst. The next adjustments still hurt, but it wasn’t as intense or as long - more like a dull ache for a day or two instead of that constant throbbing. Maybe my teeth just got used to moving? Or maybe I just got used to the weird pain.
I still get anxious before each appointment though. I keep reading horror stories online (which probably doesn’t help), and I’m always worried I’ll get another sleepless night. But so far, nothing’s been quite as bad as that first week. If you find something that really works for the pain, let me know... I’m always looking for new tricks just in case.
That first week after getting my braces on was rough for me too, and I kept second-guessing if it was all worth the money and hassle. I tried the ice pack trick, but honestly, I just ended up with a numb face and no real relief. What actually helped was sticking to a super soft (and cheap) diet - think instant mashed potatoes, applesauce, and ramen. Not exactly gourmet, but it meant I didn’t have to buy special foods or risk breaking a bracket on something crunchy.
I also noticed ibuprofen worked better for me than acetaminophen, but I tried not to take it unless I really needed it since I’m always worried about the cost of refills adding up over months. Warm salt water rinses were surprisingly soothing - never thought something so basic would help.
One thing I keep wondering is if anyone’s found any budget-friendly mouthwashes or gels that actually make a difference? Everything my ortho recommended was pricier than I expected and didn’t seem much different from generic stuff at the drugstore. Curious if there’s anything that’s actually worth spending a few extra bucks on, or if it’s all marketing...
