Man, my gums have been so puffy since I got my braces tightened last week. It’s driving me nuts, feels like I’m chewing on marshmallows half the time. Anyone else get this? Is it something that goes away or am I just doomed to live with chipmunk cheeks?

Swollen gums after a tightening? Been there, and yeah, it’s super annoying. For me, the puffiness usually flares up for a few days after each adjustment, especially if the wires are really doing their thing. It’s like my whole mouth just wants to protest. I wouldn’t say you’re doomed to chipmunk status forever, though. Most of the time, it settles down once your mouth gets used to the new pressure.

Have you noticed if it’s worse around certain teeth, or is it just everywhere? Sometimes, if I wasn’t brushing as carefully (because, let’s be honest, it’s hard with all that hardware), the gums would stay puffy longer. My ortho said that swollen gums can be partly from irritation but also from not being able to clean as well. Warm salt water rinses helped me a bit—nothing fancy, just a quick swish after meals.

If it’s not calming down in a week or two, or if you see weird colors or pain gets worse, maybe check in with your ortho just in case. But yeah, marshmallow mouth is a rite of passage for a lot of us.

Yeah, I totally get what you mean about the chipmunk cheeks. I freaked out after my first tightening because my gums got all puffy and I was convinced I was doing something wrong. For me, it was mostly around the front teeth, and it did calm down after about a week—though it felt like forever. I started doing the salt water rinses too, and that seemed to help a bit. Brushing is such a pain with all the brackets, but I noticed if I skipped flossing even once, the swelling stuck around longer. It’s honestly reassuring to hear others go through this too... makes me feel less alone.

It’s wild how much the swelling can mess with your head. After my second adjustment, my gums ballooned up so much I was convinced I had some kind of infection. Turns out, it was just the wires putting new pressure on things. Salt water rinses helped a bit, but honestly, using one of those water flossers was a game changer for me. I know some people say it’s overkill, but it really cut down the puffiness, especially when I was lazy about regular floss. The brackets make everything harder, but I guess it’s just part of the whole process…

Yeah, the brackets really do make everything a pain. I’ve noticed if I slack off on brushing right at the gumline, the swelling gets worse. Water flossers sound tempting—never tried one, but regular flossing is such a hassle with all the wires. The salt water rinse stings a bit but does seem to help calm things down for a while. Still feels weird that my mouth can puff up so much just from a little adjustment.
