Been dealing with braces for a couple months now and I'm still torn between using wax or those silicone brace covers to avoid cuts and irritation. Wax is easy but kinda messy, silicone seems cleaner but feels weird to me. Which do you guys prefer and why?

I've had braces for about a year now and went through the same dilemma early on. Initially, I leaned towards wax because it was straightforward to apply, but honestly, the constant reapplication became tedious after meals. Plus, as you mentioned, it does get messy—especially if you're eating out or at work.

I eventually switched over to silicone covers and found them pretty effective once I got used to them. Yeah, they're definitely a bit awkward at first—felt bulky and unnatural—but after a week or so of consistent use, that weird feeling faded away. The best part was not having to deal with wax residue anymore...that alone made the slight initial discomfort worth it for me.

Ultimately though, everyone's different. If you haven't given silicone a full try yet (like consistently for a week or two), it might be worth another shot before you settle back into wax permanently.

I totally get what you're saying about silicone feeling weird at first—I had the same experience. Wax was my go-to initially because it seemed simpler, but the constant hassle of reapplying after every snack or meal drove me nuts. Plus, finding bits of wax stuck in my teeth after lunch at work was...not ideal.

Eventually, I gave silicone another shot, and after a few days, it felt way less intrusive. The trick for me was trimming the silicone covers down a bit so they weren't as bulky. Once I did that, they felt way more comfortable and natural. Also, silicone held up better throughout the day, so I wasn't constantly worrying about reapplying.

But yeah, everyone's mouth is different, so what works for one person might not for another. If silicone still feels off after giving it a fair chance, sticking with wax isn't the end of the world—just gotta keep those little wax containers handy everywhere you go, haha.

I had a similar experience with wax—kept finding bits stuck in my teeth after coffee breaks, not fun. Silicone took some getting used to, but trimming definitely helped. Did anyone else find certain brands of silicone covers softer or easier to adjust to?
