You’re not alone if your mouth doesn’t just “adjust” on its own... sometimes you have to experiment a bit.
That’s been my experience too, honestly. When I first got braces, my gums swelled up so much I thought I was having some kind of allergic reaction. My orthodontist said it was “just inflammation” and would settle down, but it took way longer than I expected—like, almost a month before things calmed down. I was brushing pretty aggressively at first, thinking it would help, but it actually made things worse. Turns out, gentle brushing with a soft-bristle brush is way more effective when your gums are already irritated.
The toothpaste thing is interesting—my ortho didn’t mention switching brands, but I did notice that anything with strong whitening agents seemed to sting more and made the swelling worse. Ended up going for a really basic, sensitive formula and that helped a lot.
Crunchy foods... yeah, I learned the hard way with popcorn. It got stuck everywhere and my gums were not happy about it. After that, I stuck to softer foods for a while—yogurt, eggs, pasta—until the swelling went down. It’s kind of wild how much little things can set off your gums when you have braces.
I do think everyone’s adjustment period is different. Some of my friends barely had any gum issues at all, while others (like me) had weeks of puffy, sore gums. If it drags on or gets worse, definitely worth checking in with your ortho again. But yeah, experimenting with technique and products made a big difference for me. It’s annoying but not unusual.
Interesting point about switching toothpastes—personally, I’m not convinced that the brand or whitening agents make a huge difference unless you’ve got a specific sensitivity. Sometimes it’s more about technique and consistency than the actual product. Did your ortho check for plaque buildup or early gingivitis? Inflammation that sticks around for weeks can sometimes mean there’s something else going on, not just “adjustment.” Just curious if anyone else had their ortho do a thorough check when things didn’t settle down.
