Totally get what you're saying about ice packs feeling too sharp at first. I had the same experience—cold was almost painful initially. Warm compresses felt gentler for me too, especially after the first day. And yeah, hydration...definitely underestimated that one myself. Lesson learned the hard way.

I hear you on the warm compresses, but honestly, ice packs were a lifesaver for me right from the start. Yeah, they felt pretty intense at first—almost like a shock—but after a minute or two, that sharpness faded into relief. I found that wrapping the ice pack in an extra towel or cloth really helped soften that initial sting. Warm compresses felt nice later on, but early swelling responded way better to cold for me. Totally agree about hydration though...I underestimated it big time and regretted it later. Gum surgery recovery is no joke, but hang in there—it gets easier each day.

Interesting perspective on the ice packs—I often recommend alternating between cold and warm compresses, but you're right, early swelling usually responds best to cold. Wrapping the ice pack in an extra towel is a great tip to ease that initial discomfort. Hydration is definitely underrated; I've seen patients bounce back quicker when they're diligent about fluids. Curious if anyone found certain foods or drinks particularly helpful (or problematic) during recovery...I've heard mixed experiences with smoothies and soups.

My daughter had gum surgery last year, and smoothies were actually a lifesaver for us. But we learned quickly to avoid anything too acidic—pineapple or citrus made her mouth sting pretty badly. Mild banana or avocado smoothies worked best...gentle on the gums and filling enough.

Glad you mentioned avocado! I've seen a lot of patients find relief with avocado smoothies after gum procedures—it’s creamy, nutritious, and doesn't irritate sensitive areas. Another tip I've noticed works well is adding a bit of Greek yogurt or almond butter. It boosts protein intake, helps with satiety, and still keeps things gentle. Ice packs definitely help with swelling, but having comforting, nourishing foods on hand makes recovery feel a little easier.
