That’s exactly what my kid goes through—she’s super sensitive to any weird tastes, so hotel sinks are a nightmare. We started bringing those little retainer cleaning tablets and bottled water, but I always wonder if that’s overkill. Has anyone tried just using mouthwash in a pinch?

- I totally get the bottled water thing—hotel tap water can taste like pool chemicals mixed with mystery minerals.
- I’ve tried mouthwash in a pinch. It works okay for a quick rinse, but my retainer always feels a little… sticky? Not sure if it’s just me being picky.
- Those cleaning tablets are clutch, though. They fizz up and make me feel like I’m doing science while cleaning.
- Once tried using the hotel’s “complimentary” hand soap. Regret. Minty soap taste for hours.
- If your kid’s super sensitive, honestly, bottled water + tablets isn’t overkill. It’s just being prepared (and saving yourself from complaints).
- The only time I’d skip it is if I forgot everything and had to MacGyver it with what’s in the room. Mouthwash is better than nothing, but not my first choice.
- Pro tip: if you’re a tech nerd like me, label your retainer case with an AirTag or Tile. Lost mine once in a hotel—never again.

Retainers are weirdly high-maintenance, but hey, at least we get straight teeth out of the deal…

Bottled water and cleaning tablets really do make a difference, especially if you’re prone to sensitivity or just want to avoid that weird aftertaste. I’ve resorted to hotel soap once—never again. The AirTag idea is clever; losing a retainer is no joke. All this effort feels tedious, but it does pay off in the long run.

Using bottled water is a game changer, especially if you're traveling somewhere with questionable tap quality. I’ve actually tried UV sterilizer pens too—bit overkill maybe, but peace of mind matters. The AirTag hack is smart; I stuck one in my case after almost losing mine at an airport once. It’s a little extra hassle, but honestly, the routine becomes second nature after a while.

I totally get the bottled water thing—my dentist would probably faint if I told him I rinsed my retainer with tap water in some places. The UV pen sounds wild, but hey, if it keeps the funk away, why not? I’m all about the AirTag too. After leaving my retainer case in a hotel bathroom once (panic mode: activated), I started treating it like a tiny, expensive pet. It’s a bit much at first, but you’re right, it becomes just another step.
