That first week after wisdom teeth removal… did anyone else swear by ice packs?

That “20 minutes on, 20 off” rule is a lifesaver, but I totally get why it’s tempting to ignore when your face feels like a balloon.

You’re spot on about the swelling peaking around day two—that’s textbook for most folks. It can definitely feel like it gets worse before it gets better. The “20 on, 20 off” guideline really does help manage that, even though, yeah, it’s easy to want to leave the ice on longer when your cheeks are huge. Did you notice any bruising, too? Some people get a little yellow or green tint by day three or four, which can look dramatic but is totally normal.

I’ve heard of everything from frozen peas to corn to even a bag of ice cubes wrapped in a towel. As long as you’re not putting anything directly on your skin (frostbite is real), you’re good. And calling the office—seriously, we’d rather answer a dozen “am I icing too much?” calls than have someone stressing at home. There’s no such thing as a silly question when you’re recovering from surgery.

Funny thing—I actually found the ice packs made my jaw ache after a while, almost like the cold got too deep? I switched to just cool washcloths after day two and honestly felt better. Maybe I’m weird, but constant icing didn’t do much for me.

I totally get what you mean about the ice packs. At first, I was all about them—like, “this is gonna keep the swelling down, right?” But after a few hours, my face felt numb and kind of sore in a weird way. Ended up alternating between ice and just letting my face chill (pun intended) for a bit. Cool washcloths sound way more gentle honestly. Sometimes less is more with this stuff...

I get super nervous about overdoing it with ice packs, honestly. I kept reading that too much cold could actually slow healing or even cause frostbite if you’re not careful. I did a strict 20-minutes-on, 20-minutes-off thing, but even then my jaw felt kind of stiff and tingly after a while. Did anyone else’s oral surgeon warn them about using ice for too long? I feel like there’s so much conflicting advice out there...

I totally get where you’re coming from—after my wisdom teeth came out, I was practically glued to the freezer with those gel packs. But I started worrying too, especially when the skin on my cheek felt almost numb after the second or third round. My oral surgeon did mention not to overdo it, but honestly, he just said “a few times a day” and left it at that. No strict time limits or anything.

I ended up calling the office because I was convinced I’d messed something up. The nurse told me 20 minutes at a time, same as you, but also to wrap the ice pack in a thin towel and not press it directly on the skin. Even then, I was paranoid about frostbite or making the swelling worse. My jaw felt super stiff, and I kept poking at it (which probably didn’t help).

It’s wild how many different recommendations are out there. I wish they’d just give everyone a clear, step-by-step handout or something. Anyway, I stuck with the 20-on, 20-off method for the first day or two, then switched to just heat after that. My swelling went down pretty fast, but I’m still not sure if it was the ice or just luck.
