That first week after wisdom teeth removal… did anyone else swear by ice packs?

Ice packs really do make a difference, especially in those first two days. I’ve seen people try all sorts of frozen veggies—peas, corn, even blueberries once, which made a mess. The swelling thing is interesting; there’s such a range, and honestly, genetics play a bigger role than most folks think. Warm compresses after the initial swelling phase can help with stiffness, but timing matters. That numb, puffy feeling is always strange... you’re not alone there.

Ice packs were my lifesaver, honestly. Tried using a bag of frozen peas but they kinda thawed and smelled weird after a while... not recommended. The swelling hit me hard, but my sister barely puffed up at all—guess you’re right about the genetics thing. That numb, balloon-face feeling is wild though. Switching to heat packs too soon definitely made things ache more for me, so timing’s everything.

- Ice packs really do the trick for most folks—reduces swelling if you use them right away, but yeah, timing matters a lot.
- Frozen peas are a classic, but honestly, they get gross fast. I’ve seen people try gel packs too, which stay cold longer and don’t have that weird smell.
- Genetics definitely play a role in swelling—some barely notice it, others puff up like a chipmunk.
- Heat too early can make things worse, agreed. Usually recommend waiting at least 48 hours before switching.
- Did anyone notice if sleeping propped up helped with swelling? Some patients swear by it, but I’m not totally convinced it makes a huge difference.

Sleeping propped up actually made a difference for me, at least the first couple nights. I noticed less throbbing in the morning, maybe just gravity helping out? I’ll take whatever little boost I can get after that kind of swelling.

You’re spot on—propping up really does seem to help with swelling. I used to tell friends it was like letting everything just “drain down” instead of pooling in your jaw. Ice packs were my go-to for the first 48 hours, but honestly, sleeping upright made at least as much difference. I know some folks swear by alternating heat after a couple days, but ice and gravity were my dream team for cutting down that chipmunk look.
