Worth it to get custom whitening trays from the dentist?

Thinking about getting those custom trays made at the dentist for teeth whitening. I’ve tried the over-the-counter stuff and honestly, results were meh. Are the dentist ones really that much better? Any side effects or regrets?

I keep hearing the dentist trays work better, but I'm worried about sensitivity. Did you notice any pain after using the custom ones? I had some trouble with the strips making my gums sting, so I'm kinda nervous about that happening again. Also, how long do the results actually last?

Honestly, I was nervous about sensitivity too—my teeth are drama queens when it comes to anything cold or sweet. The custom trays from my dentist actually felt way gentler than those strips. I did get a bit of zing the first couple nights, but nothing crazy, and my gums weren’t nearly as mad as they were with the strips. For me, results lasted a good few months before I noticed any dulling. It’s not forever, but definitely longer than the over-the-counter stuff in my experience. If you’re worried, maybe ask for a lower-strength gel to start? That helped me ease into it without regretting my life choices.

I had a similar experience—my teeth are super sensitive too, and those store-bought strips just made things worse. The custom trays from my dentist felt way more comfortable and I actually stuck with the routine because it wasn’t so irritating. The results lasted longer than anything I tried at home, but yeah, it’s not permanent. Starting with a milder gel helped me adjust, and my gums didn’t freak out like before. Worth the extra cost for me, honestly.

My kiddo needed whitening after braces and the dentist trays were a game changer for us. I was worried about sensitivity too, but starting with the “wimpy” gel (as my daughter called it) made a big difference. The fit was way better than those floppy drugstore strips, and we didn’t have to wrestle with them slipping off mid-Netflix. Pricey, yeah, but I’d do it again just for the peace of mind (and fewer eye rolls from my teen).
