Whenever I travel, I get a little paranoid about losing or damaging my retainer. Here’s what I do (learned the hard way after once leaving it in a hotel bathroom, ugh):
1. I always bring the case and keep it in my carry-on, not checked luggage. If my suitcase gets lost, at least my teeth won’t shift.
2. I pack a tiny travel toothbrush and some toothpaste just for cleaning the retainer—never use hotel soap, that stuff tastes terrible.
3. If I’m going somewhere for more than a week, I’ll throw in a backup case (they’re cheap online) in case I drop one or it gets gross.
4. At night, I try to put the case in the same spot so I don’t forget it (hotel pillows have eaten more retainers than you’d think).
5. I avoid wrapping it in napkins at restaurants—too easy to toss accidentally.
Anyone got better tricks? What do you do if you’re traveling somewhere with questionable tap water—should I use bottled water to rinse it, or am I overthinking?
I get the paranoia, but honestly, I don’t bother with a separate toothbrush just for the retainer. I use my regular one and give it a good rinse after—never had an issue. About the water, if I’m somewhere sketchy, I do use bottled to rinse it, but sometimes I just dry-brush and wait till I’m back at the hotel. I think as long as you’re not soaking it in tap water overnight in some random country, you’re probably fine.
I get where you’re coming from—honestly, I used to just use my regular toothbrush for both too, especially when I was in a rush. But after a couple of trips where my retainer started smelling funky, I switched to a cheap travel brush just for it. It’s not that much extra effort, and it keeps things a bit fresher. As for the water, yeah, bottled is probably overkill most places, but I’ve heard some horror stories about tap water in certain countries... Maybe I’m just overly cautious, but it gives me peace of mind.
I totally relate to the weird retainer smell—been there, and it’s just gross. Switching to a separate brush made a difference for me too, especially since my regular toothbrush always seems to pick up toothpaste gunk that I don’t want near my retainer. I used to think it was overkill, but honestly, it’s such a tiny thing to pack and now I don’t have to stress about it.
About the bottled water thing… I get where you’re coming from, and honestly, I’ve probably gone a bit overboard in the past. There was this one hostel in Southeast Asia where everyone got sick from brushing with tap water, and after that I just stuck with bottled for anything going in my mouth. Maybe it’s not necessary everywhere, but I’d rather be a little too careful than risk spending half my trip feeling awful.
It’s nice hearing someone else is just as particular about these things—makes me feel less neurotic about my own routine.
Separate brush for the retainer is a total game changer. I used to just use my regular toothbrush, but then I realized I was basically scrubbing minty old toothpaste into my retainer every night... not exactly the fresh vibe I was going for. As for bottled water—totally get it. After a sketchy hostel sink in Peru left me regretting all my life choices, I’m Team Bottled for anything dental when I travel. Maybe it’s overkill, but hey, better paranoid than puking, right?
