Funny, I actually like having a travel toothbrush just for my retainer. Maybe it’s overkill, but I feel like it gets cleaner than using my regular one. I do agree about letting it dry—nothing worse than that funky smell after a long day.

That’s not overkill at all—dedicated tools can make a difference. Have you noticed less buildup or staining since you started? I’m curious if you use any special cleaning solution on the road, or just stick to water and brushing? Letting it dry is key, though... that damp smell is the worst.

We do the same thing for my kid’s retainer—she’s got a mini toothbrush just for it, and honestly, it seems to help. I’ve noticed less of that cloudy buildup since we started. At home, we use those fizzy cleaning tablets sometimes, but on trips it’s usually just water and brushing. Do you ever worry about the case staying clean too? I feel like those can get gross fast if you’re not careful...

Yeah, the case is honestly the most underrated germ trap. I learned that the hard way when I opened mine after a flight and got hit with this weird, musty smell… Not exactly what you want before popping a retainer in your mouth. Now, I just toss a couple of those alcohol wipes into my bag and give the case a quick wipe every day or two. Maybe overkill, but it’s easier than trying to deep-clean it in some random hotel sink.

I used to just rinse the case with water, but it never really felt clean—plus, if there’s even a little moisture left, stuff grows fast. Once I actually found some fuzzy bits in the corners (pretty sure it was mold), so now I make sure to dry it out completely before packing. Not gonna lie, sometimes I stick a napkin in there just to absorb extra moisture if I’m in a rush.

Honestly, I care more about the case now than the retainer itself… at least the retainer gets brushed regularly!

I totally get what you mean about the case being a secret germ magnet. I used to just rinse mine too, thinking it was enough, but then I noticed that weird smell after a few days. Alcohol wipes are such a game changer—honestly, it’s not overkill at all. Mold in the corners is the worst... been there, and it made me way more careful. Little things like drying it with a napkin actually make a difference. You’re definitely not alone in caring more about the case than the retainer sometimes—I do the same.
