Getting through the days after a root canal - any hacks?
Everyone’s pain tolerance is different, so it’s totally okay to do what works for you.
That’s such an important point. I’ve had patients who barely needed anything, and others who really benefited from scheduled ibuprofen for a couple days. Did you notice if cold compresses helped at all? Sometimes alternating those with meds can keep swelling down even more.

I was super nervous about the pain after mine, and honestly, the cold compress was a lifesaver for me. I kept one on and off for the first day, and it really seemed to help with the swelling. I did take ibuprofen too, but I probably relied on the ice packs more because I was worried about overdoing meds. Everyone’s different, but for me, the cold made a big difference - plus, it just felt kind of soothing when everything was throbbing.
Totally get what you mean about being nervous - root canals have such a scary rep, but honestly, the cold packs made things way more manageable for me too. Ibuprofen helped, but sometimes just having that icy relief on my cheek was enough to calm things down. You’re right, everyone’s different, but it’s awesome you found something that worked for you.
I keep hearing about cold packs, but honestly, I’m a bit worried about overdoing it or making things worse. Did anyone have issues with swelling coming back after stopping the cold packs? I’m also not sure how long to keep using them - like, is there a point where it’s not helping anymore? Still pretty sore and just want to make sure I’m not missing something obvious...
We dealt with this after my daughter’s root canal - she was pretty swollen for a couple days. I was also worried about overusing the cold packs, but her dentist said 15-20 minutes on, then at least that long off, and only for the first 24-48 hours. After that, they said it doesn’t really do much for swelling. Once we stopped, she didn’t have any rebound swelling, but the soreness did stick around for a bit.
I’m curious if anyone noticed a difference between using cold packs vs. just sticking with pain meds? We tried both, but honestly, I couldn’t tell if the cold made as much of a difference as people say. Maybe it’s more about comfort than actual swelling control...
