Ever heard of onlays instead of crowns after a root canal?

Kids have a knack for describing things in the funniest ways, don’t they? I remember my grandson telling me his tooth felt “bouncy” after he got an onlay. You’re right—making that extra appointment is totally worth it. Fixing those little issues early saves so much trouble down the road. Sometimes it feels like such a hassle, but honestly, peace of mind is priceless.

That’s definitely been true for me. I had an onlay after a root canal and honestly, it felt a bit odd at first—almost like the tooth was “springy.” But it settled down after a week or so. I used to think crowns were the only option, but my dentist said onlays can preserve more of the actual tooth, which sounded good to me. The extra appointment was a pain, but in hindsight, I’d rather deal with that than risk another big procedure later.

That’s cool to hear your onlay settled in after a week. I’ve always just assumed crowns were the go-to after a root canal, so it’s interesting to hear there are other options. The idea of saving more of the tooth sounds like a big plus. Did you have any issues eating or talking while it was settling? I get nervous about anything feeling “off” in my mouth for too long, but it sounds like it worked out for you.

I get what you mean about things feeling “off”—I’m super sensitive to changes in my mouth too. But honestly, the cost difference was a big factor for me. Crowns can get pricey, and my insurance barely covered it last time. With the onlay, it felt weird for a few days, but not painful or anything. Did your dentist mention if your tooth structure was strong enough for an onlay? I heard not everyone’s a candidate, which made me a little nervous at first.

Funny you mention being nervous about not being a candidate—my dentist was pretty blunt about it. He basically said, “If there’s not enough tooth left, an onlay’s a no-go, end of story.” I lucked out since my tooth had just enough structure after the root canal, but he showed me some X-rays where folks weren’t so lucky.

I totally get the cost factor, too. Crowns nearly made my wallet cry last time, and the insurance coverage was... let’s just say “underwhelming.” The onlay felt odd at first, kind of like having a Lego brick stuck to your molar, but it settled in after a week or so.

Did you have any issues with sensitivity after yours? Mine was a bit tingly with hot drinks for a bit, but nothing wild. I keep wondering if that’s just part of the deal with onlays or if it means something’s off.
